Totoro is an approx 1-year old black kitty who was born in a cemetery in Jersey City. Given her circumstances she grew up feral the first 6 months of her life. Since going into foster care, however, she has come a long way—learning how to be a sweet, indoor cat, and accepting kindness from humans.
While she is initially shy with new humans, once she gets to know you she comes out of her shell. She is actually quite independent and can be a confident girl. Totoro displays some of the quirkiness that black cats are known for!
Totoro absolutely loves to eat, happily accepting pets during meal and treat times. It’s during these times she can be quite vocal. She never met a Churu flavor she didn’t like! She also loves to play. She finds practically any kind of toy entertaining and will easily go around entertaining herself too.
Totoro would be best with an adopter who is patient and willing work with her on socialization. She clearly has an interest in humans as she is curious about what her foster parents get up to around the house, she likes to be in the same room as her fosters, and she will sleep at the foot of the bed at night.
While Totoro has made huge strides in head butting and seeking pets during meal time, she is skittish when it comes to petting outside of those times. With time she will likely accept more petting and affection. It is unclear whether she will turn into a full-on lap cat. While some cats are like barnacles, Totoro is more of an appreciate-you-from-a-distance kind of cat, at this time.
The right adopter will appreciate how far she has come and her potential to blossom as part of her adoptive family.
Totoro is currently in foster with 2 resident cats. She is definitely interested in other cats and could do well with another cat(s) who can match/tolerate her confidence. We suspect she could do well with dogs too. She could also do well as a solo cat.
We are seeking a foster for her, one that will be patient and dedicated, and is ideally open to keeping Totoro as a potential forever cat.
