Sweetie Pie | 5-year-old Hound | A big-hearted boy who just wants to be loved
Sweetie Pie is a 5-year-old hound weighing about 60 pounds with a handsome brown coat and a whole lot of love to give. He’s a friendly, playful, and sweet boy who truly enjoys being around people and other dogs. He has had positive interactions with dogs of all sizes and ages and does well with children, including kids under 10. Sweetie Pie doesn’t show a preference for men or women—he loves everyone equally and is happiest when he’s part of the action.
Sweetie Pie is somewhat house trained and is still learning, but he does let you know he needs to go out by standing at the door. He enjoys going for walks and does fairly well on leash, though he can pull a bit and should always remain leashed, as he has a tendency to wander. He definitely prefers being outside, where he can sniff and explore, but he is gradually becoming more comfortable indoors with time and routine. Structure and boundaries are still a work in progress for him, and he will benefit from a patient home willing to continue that training.
Crate training is going well and actually helps keep Sweetie Pie calm. He may whine or bark briefly when crated or left alone, but he settles down and often goes to sleep. He has been left alone for 3–4 hours at a time and does okay, especially when crated. Outside of the crate, he may vocalize if left alone, so continued work on confidence and independence will be important.
Sweetie Pie has a higher energy level and will eventually need regular daily exercise, such as longer walks or hikes, to be ready to relax on the couch. At the moment, however, his activity is limited because he is undergoing treatment for heartworm. Food, affection, and getting outside are his biggest motivators, and while he hasn’t shown much interest in toys yet, he loves to sniff and explore. Some of his favorite endearing behaviors include resting his head on you and happily flopping over for belly rubs.
Sweetie Pie was rescued from North Carolina and has had a rough past, including being chained or crated for long periods of time and moving through several homes. Despite this, he remains incredibly well-natured and trusting. His ideal home would have a securely fenced yard (six-foot fencing recommended), another dog or dogs to keep him company, and people who enjoy having a loyal, affectionate companion around. With patience, consistency, and love, Sweetie Pie will make a wonderful addition to the right home.
