My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Available Now — Meet Rory!

Currently in Falls Church, Virginia

After being abandoned at a boarding facility in Texas, Rory has proven just how resilient she is — acclimating beautifully to the cold and snow of Virginia and blossoming in foster care.

Rory is a young-at-heart, spunky 10-year-old Australian Shepherd with a sharp mind, playful spirit, and a huge heart for her people.

Rory’s Personality

Rory is clever, confident, and full of Aussie charm. She loves to play, especially with other dogs, and is known for her strategic “cut-off” moves during chase — she truly thinks while she plays!

She can be very vocal during play, with rumbles and growls paired with classic play bows. It can sound intense at first, but it’s all just enthusiasm and show — she means no harm.

She’s affectionate, people-oriented, and has never met a stranger. Men, women, and respectful children (10+) are all welcome in her world.

Play & Behavior

Rory is very much “all Aussie”:

• High prey drive (squirrels are fascinating!)
• Loves stuffies and tug-of-war
• Enjoys puzzle toys and learns quickly
• Food motivated — great for training
• Velcro pup who wants to be near her people

She plays well with other dogs once settled and currently enjoys life with two foster siblings. It took her about a week to fully adjust, and now they’re great pals.

Resource Guarding (Managed & Improving)

Rory does have some resource guarding behaviors with food and toys around other dogs only. With proper management and training, she does very well:

• Fed separately
• High-value items enjoyed in her crate
• Will trade toys for treats
• Thriving with structure and consistency

She’s learning that she doesn’t have to be “the boss” anymore and is making great progress.

Training & Manners

Rory is a smart, eager learner and already knows:

• Sit
• Down
• Shake
• Crate trained
• Good leash manners (may pull for squirrels)

She can be reactive to other dogs on leash but is easily redirected with food. Her motivation makes continued training very manageable.

She sleeps soundly in her crate from 9:00 PM – 7:00 AM and is growing more confident being alone. Her separation anxiety is improving, and she now settles well with enrichment like frozen Kongs and puzzle toys.

Grooming & Handling

Rory currently needs patience with grooming and handling:

• Nervous with grooming
• Doesn’t like collar grabbing
• May snarl when uncomfortable

With gentle, positive training, she can continue building trust. Because of this, homes with small children are not recommended, but Aussie-savvy kids 10+ are a good fit.

Ideal Home for Rory

Rory will thrive with adopters who:

Understand strong-willed Aussies
Provide clear leadership and boundaries
Continue positive training
Are home often
Offer love, structure, and companionship

She would enjoy having a dog friend but can also be happy as an only dog with enough interaction and enrichment.

She’s flexible, enjoys outings to cafes and parks, and adapts well with guidance.

Best Thing About Rory

Rory’s connection with her people is truly special. She loves to “talk,” interact, and engage — forming deep bonds with those she trusts. Her ability to connect is almost magical.

More than anything, she wants to be with her humans — walking, playing, cuddling, and sharing life together.

More about this rescue

Nancy Pearlman-Gonzalez, Founder and CEO, created Australian Shepherds Furever (ASF), a non-profit organization to promote the education, rescue, fostering and adoption of the Australian Shepherd breed of dog.
In July 2012, Australian Shepherds Furever (ASF) initiated as a page on Facebook. Hoping to have 1,000 members at the end one year, ASF quickly grew into a network of more than 58,000 dedicated individuals striving to provide aid and refuge to Aussies all over the country.
From these phenomena, the website www.australianshepherdsfurever.org was developed to educate the public on this intelligent and beautiful breed, and provide resources to those seeking help or willing to contribute to the Adopt, Save and Foster (ASF) philosophy. ASF filed for non- profit status in July 2013 and obtained its status in July 2014 and through proactive networking, partnerships, training/rehabilitation and fundraising, ASF has saved the lives of countless dogs to include those with Parvo, Mange, Tick Disease, Cancer, Pneumonia, broken limbs and some of the most extreme cases of abuse that one could imagine. ASF focuses on the Aussies that most would turn their backs on. ASF is in its 5th year and over 1,910 Australian Shepherds have been rescued from high kills shelters, abusive owners and other high-risk situations.
We, as humans, have a responsibility to uphold, shelter and care for those beings that are less fortunate, that are simply cast away. Thanks to proactive individuals who work collectively, Aussies nationwide are being given a chance at a better life through Australian Shepherds Volunteers are an integral component of ASF for the maintenance of the website, screening potential fosters and adopters, providing training, fundraising, data base management, networking and transporting of recued Aussies. All Volunteers; Adopters, Fosters, Trainers and Transporters etc. are carefully screened and vetted to assure the safe and vital placement of these dogs into furever homes. We currently have over 170 foster families and over 160 dogs in foster care nationwide. We have professional trainers to work with our dogs with severe behavioral issues. We also have a team of Rescue Coordinators, Medical Advisors, Fundraisers, Regional Reps, Application Processors, Data Base Managers, Social Media Managers, Microchip and ID tag Registrars and Ground and Air Transport Coordinators that work together to save these beautiful dogs.
Furever (ASF).
