My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I can be met at Tractor Supply 1253 Route 311, Patterson, NY 12563 on 12/27/25 from 10am to 1pm. If you can’t make the event, check the website and those still available can be met in their foster home.

Meet the "Great Heelers" – Half Fluff, Half Brains, All Heart! 🐾
These 8-week-old beauties are the ultimate "best of both worlds" mix. From their Great Pyrenees side, they’ve inherited thick coats and a calm, soulful nature. From their Red Heeler side, they’ve got those iconic copper speckles and a sharp intelligence that means they’ll learn "sit" before you even finish the sentence!
• The Vibe: Sturdy, adventurous, and incredibly cuddly.
• The Look: Fluffy coats with unique red mottling and "eyeliner" markings.
• Ideal Home: Someone with a physically fenced yard to roam and plenty of love to give.

🐾 Quick Facts: The Great Heeler Mix
Size & Build
• Expected Weight: Between 50–80 lbs as adults. (This varies based on whether they take after the Pyrenees or the Heeler).
• Height: Roughly 20–26 inches at the shoulder.
• Build: Sturdy, athletic, and hardy. They are built for hiking, farm work, or long walks.

Coat & Grooming
• Texture: Expect a dense, double coat. It will be incredibly soft as a puppy and become more weather resistant as they age.
• Shedding: High. They will likely "blow" their coat twice a year.
• Grooming Needs: A deep brushing once or twice a week is essential to prevent matting and keep their red-speckled fur looking bright.

Temperament & Training
• Energy Level: Moderate to High. They need daily mental and physical exercise to stay happy.

• Trainability: Very High. Heelers are world-class learners, but the Pyrenees side adds a touch of "independent thinking." Positive reinforcement works wonders!
• Best Environment: They thrive in homes with physically fenced yards. They are natural guardians and will likely be very loyal to their "pack."

What Makes Them Special?
The "Great Heeler" is known for being more grounded and "chill" than a purebred Heeler, but more alert and athletic than a purebred Pyrenees. They are truly a versatile "all-purpose" dog.

How to meet dogs listed with "NY" :
If the dog is listed with an 'Avail date" and a (location) - the dog cannot be met until the event and it is a first come, first to meet and adopt event with the dogs being met in the order the potential adopters sign in.

If the dog is listed as being in a (foster home ie: Foster in Carmel) please email us at info@pawsafe.org and we will set up an appointment for you to meet the dog(s) that interest you at their foster home(s).

**** We are sorry, but we cannot adopt to Massachusetts residents. This is a Ma Dept. of Agriculture policy, not ours.

Additional adoption info

Our volunteers have made a commitment to ensure that the animals we place will be in their new home for life.

Once an application is submitted, a volunteer will work with you to meet the puppies that interest you.

Please plan on meeting the animal you are interested in adopting. Although the pictures and descriptions may show the "perfect" pet for you - nothing replaces an actual meeting!! You can not place an animal on hold. This is unfair to both the animal and other potential adopters.

ADOPTION FEES:
Please read the Q&A's on our website for adoption fee information and what is included.

If you'd like to bring a donation for the dogs, we're always in need of old towels, sheets, paper towels, laundry detergent, and bleach.

More about this shelter

We work very closely with rescues in southern states to find new homes for dogs and puppies who deserve a family despite their state of origin.

Most of the puppies in our care come from over-crowded shelters in states with extreme over population and high kill rates. Our main goal is to place orphaned and unwanted animals into loving permanent homes.
