UPDATE 25Jan2026: Barkley now has an adoption pending!

19-month-old Barkley is an energetic boy who is very hesitant at first when meeting other dogs and people, and then is full-on happy!  He's of smallish size and loves attention and to be close.  Barkley is crate trained, and, in fact, supposedly spent much of his puppyhood in a crate, which might account for some of his shyness. He is loving his newfound freedom in his foster home. Barkley is not housebroken yet, so he will require a home willing to train him and that will allow him lots of freedom and gentle exposure to new things. Barkley seems to derive confidence from the presence of another dog, so a home with a confident doggie buddy is preferred, but not required.

Additional adoption info

All of our paperwork is on our website. (http://www.ggbassetrescue.org/info/adoption) but we expect an application form, a home check visit, possible reference check and an adoption donation. All this helps to ensure that the right basset hound is chosen for you, to match your lifestyle and circumstances, as you will become a "forever" home!

We do not have a specific kennel or shelter location to take our dogs to. We are so widespread that we just go from foster home to forever home.

More about this rescue

Golden Gate Basset Rescue rescues Basset Hounds from abusive, abandoned and unwanted situations across the whole of Northern California. We were formed in 2005 after operating for nearly ten years under the Northern California Basset Hound Club.

Today, Golden Gate Basset Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization. We exist solely on donations.

Golden Gate Basset Rescue takes orphaned bassets into foster care, usually in volunteer homes, where they are loved and cared for until permanent, forever homes are found. We provide veterinary care, which includes > necessary vaccinations, spaying and neutering, heartworm, flea and tick prevention.

Our wonderful volunteers spend time with the dogs to evaluate them, deal with any behavioral issues, and restore them to full health with good food and love.
