Magnus' story really is a tough one to fathom. At 17 years old, this senior lost his home, his family, and every bit of familiarity he knew when he was dumped outside after a new pet entered the home that could not coexist with him. A neighbor found him huddled in the corner of the yard confused and cold, and did her best to keep him warm and fed while she searched for someone to help.
He arrived to the shelter confused, exhausted, and very thin. Despite the ordeal he had just been through he was immediately trusting of us - leaning into pets, or crawling into our laps with a low steady purr just grateful to be warm and safe. Routine vetting revealed that he is blind or at best very minimally visual, has some hearing loss, early kidney disease and is FIV(+). He's since been started on a prescription diet and a couple of supplements to help keep him healthy and will need a recheck in a couple of weeks to make sure he's doing well - which we would be more than happy to provide for an adopter.
At this point, what Magnus needs most is to get out of a cage and into a home. No super senior kitty should ever have to live in a cage in a busy shelter, and Magnus is no exception. Despite his special needs, he's incredibly mellow and trusting of new people. When he's not napping or eating his favorite lickable treats, he loves to curl up in our laps, get lots of head scratches, and eat giant piles of catnip before settling back into a nap. More about this shelter
Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. is founded on the belief that all animals have a natural right to humane treatment including proper care and safe shelter. Due to overpopulation, there are insufficient homes for most cats and dogs. Some are lucky enough to find temporary shelter and a few even find permanent homes. However it is a devastating fact that the majority are either euthanized or forced to chance life without shelter.
To support our belief and to relieve the unnecessary suffering of animals, we shall:
1.Extend every effort to find, evaluate, and secure good adoptive homes for animals in our care.
2.Provide animals with medical services and behavior therapy to the extent of our ability.
3.Adhere to a “no-kill” policy: animals shall not be euthanized for the purpose of providing space for new animals.
4.Adhere to a 100% spay and neuter policy.
5.Maintain continuing humane education programs and in particular to schools.
