My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

✨ Meet Romeo ✨

Romeo is a very affectionate boy with a heart full of love 🐾💖 He’s especially wonderful outside, where he shows just how nice and well-mannered he is while enjoying time with his handler. Romeo knows how to sit on command and does a great job listening, making interactions easy and enjoyable.

He truly loves attention and happily tolerates full body petting, soaking it all in with a calm, friendly attitude. Romeo would be a great match for someone looking for a loving, people-oriented dog who enjoys companionship, gentle handling, and spending quality time together. If you’re ready for a loyal, affectionate friend, Romeo would love to meet you 🐶✨

More about this shelter

Originally founded in 1891, our shelter has served as a safe haven for thousands of stray, unwanted, abused, abandoned, and sick animals throughout South Jersey. Today, as Associated Humane Societies South, we continue that mission as part of New Jersey’s largest animal sheltering system.

Associated Humane Societies (AHS) rescues stray and homeless animals—both domestic pets and wildlife—providing compassionate care and sanctuary until they can find loving homes. As a community-based organization, we also offer low-cost veterinary services and humane education programs to promote responsible pet guardianship across the state.

For over a century, AHS has stood as a refuge for abused and neglected animals. Founded in 1906, the organization operates shelters in Newark, Forked River, and Tinton Falls—and now, South Jersey’s location in Vineland. The Forked River facility is also home to Popcorn Park, a sanctuary established in 1977 for abandoned, injured, exploited, or elderly wildlife, exotics, farm animals, and birds.

AHS is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, proud to be devoted to the thousands of animals who enter our doors each year in search of a better life.
