My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Mama Maui’s journey into rescue began on a freezing night on the Red Lake Reservation, when her puppies were at risk and being given away one by one. While we were unable to secure the entire litter, we are incredibly grateful that Mama Maui and three of her babies are now safe, warm, and loved.

Maui is truly a dream dog. She is calm, gentle, and incredibly mild-mannered — not fearful, not aggressive, and deeply trusting of people. She welcomes affection, seeks out love, and has shown nothing but patience and grace in her foster home. She is a devoted mother and an absolute joy to be around.

Her foster describes her as:
🩷Exceptionally sweet and loving
❤️Calm and easygoing, even during meals
🧡Comfortable with people handling her food with no issues
💛Playful and respectful with other dogs (especially her foster dog friend, Tess)
💚Protective of her puppies in a healthy, appropriate way
🩵Athletic (she can clear a 30” puppy pen with ease!)

Medical transparency is incredibly important to us. During routine intake testing, Mama Maui was found to be heartworm positive. While this diagnosis is serious, heartworm disease is treatable, and Maui has a clear, veterinarian-guided plan in place. Because of this, Mama Maui is part of our Foster-to-Adopt program and will need to complete heartworm treatment prior to being spayed.

Despite everything she’s been through, Maui remains gentle, affectionate, and full of love. She deserves a future where she is cherished not just as a mama — but as a family member.

Maui’s adoption fee is $400 plus MN tax which covers her HW Treatment, spay, vaccinations, microchip and any additional medical care she may have needed while in the rescue’s care.
We are a foster based rescue, we do not house dogs at a facility. Age and breed are NLR's best guess as we often don't know who or what mom and dad are. If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application on our website www.northernlakesrescue.org

Go meet their pets

Northern Lakes Rescue is foster based so all dogs are being fostered by amazing volunteers across the state of MN. Because of this, we require all meet and greets to be scheduled after an application is submitted.

Our focus after you apply is to get you scheduled to meet the dog within 3 to 7 days.

More about this rescue

Our Vision is to be a voice for those who are voiceless. We hear them with our hearts and give them a voice. Looking into the eyes of a rescued animal will speak volumes; watching those eyes light up will have an everlasting impact on you and the rescued animals.

We aren’t a typical rescue as we don’t take in dogs and put them in kennels until they’re adopted. All dogs we rescue are placed in loving foster homes that teach them to be the best dog they can be.

Our journey doesn’t end with adoption, either. We are here for you to support you in integrating your new member into your home, cheer new triumphs, and help with struggles.
