My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

History: Our Out of the Cold Rescue Effort was a great success in welcoming over 180+ animals to rescue from rural areas in North Dakota before the cold set in. These animals are all so deserving and thankful to get a second chance in finding a forever home of their own!

A Note from the Foster: Hi, My name is Claus! My foster family describes me as one of the sweetest boys they’ve had. I love to cuddle with them on the couch, bed, or floor. I like to sneak in and snuggle up next to my lab foster brother too. But I will give you space and lay in my own spot if you need it.

I am a curious boy and love exploring every inch of the house and yard. I am doing really well learning good house manners but my foster parents still keep an eye on me and make sure not to keep food on the counter so as not to tempt me!

Before I came to my foster family I was in a kennel and got along with all of the dogs. I love running the fence with the neighbor dog. I love hanging out with my foster lab brother and I've been very calm and respectful with every dog I meet. When it comes to walks, I am excellent and like to stick by your side and I never pull.

I am a fast learner because I LOVE getting treats! I use a doggy door to go outside by myself to potty but if the door is closed I know to whine by the door so my family will let me out. I get a treat for going potty outside and I even learned that if I go out to pee and then come back in for a treat, I can go right back out and poop and come back in for a second treat! I also already know sit, down, off and I am continuing to learn new behaviors!

I totally match my family's energy. If we want to sit around the house watching holiday movies all day then I’m in. If we want to go for a long walk I love that too. If you want to run around the yard with extreme zoomies I’m always ready.

The one thing my foster family is working on with me is my separation anxiety. I am on some medication to help me right now. When my family leaves I have to go in a crate because they don’t want me to get into anything and tear it up. The meds are really helping me be calm in the crate when they are at work, but sometimes I whine and bark. But I don’t chew or paw at my kennel. At night my foster family puts a gate up so I stay upstairs with them and my foster brother and I do great. When they take a shower I have no issues having run of the house with my foster brother while I am away from them during that time. My foster brother was having some mobility issues when I first came to stay but now that he’s doing well again my family said they are going to try having us together in the dog room (not in a crate) to see if I do even better being alone with another dog when they leave.

I would do best in a home with other dogs and ideally a family that isn't gone all the time to help me work through my separation anxiety. At this time it wouldn’t be a good idea for me to live in a home with shared walls as I can be a little loud in my kennel. My foster family said I have been getting better since I came and even though I can get upset sometimes when they leave I’m always a calm happy boy when they get back and still go in my kennel with a treat every time!
