My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

If you look up “devastatingly handsome” in the dictionary, Rivian’s bright, beautiful face will be staring right back at you. This HUGE hunk (both in size and in character) is going to be a really lovely step-down Malinois, **OR** a low key addition for a dedicated Mali collector. 😂

Rivi was found as a stray, emaciated, so thin and frail it was difficult for him to climb stairs, get on the couch, or even get up from laying down. He spent weeks in foster with no inducement in weight, even with 8+ cups of hi cal food a day.

Our vets agreed to start him on an EPI diet (hydrolyzed protein, B12 supplementation, pancreatic enzymes in soaked food, and Omega 3/6/9 supplementation) and it WORKED. He began picking up weight within a week, and his energy was up, his mood was bright, and we knew we were on the right track.

We know EPI can be a scary diagnosis; Rivian is doing exceptionally well. He has a healthy appetite, his digestion appears good, and his condition is stable. He will need to continue the diet he is on for the REST OF HIS LIFE. We will be verifying veterinary references and discussing plans of action with potential adopters; it does not take long for EPI dogs to lose condition if their routine is not managed.

Now onto the better stuff: this guy is so snuggly. He’s not a fan of strangers, and will disappear into the yard or the house when they come calling. He loves walks with his known humans, and will also be begrudgingly tag along for car rides. He is amazingly easy in the house, and prefers a 5x5 or 4x4 kennel to a regular crate, where he will bark- often, and loudly.

For an unequipped home, Rivi looks like a lot. For a home that thinks management is no issue, and loves a good schedule, owning him will be a walk in the park!

This guy has so much affection to give, and his personality (and ball drive) develops by the day. He is goofy but soft, strong but gentle, and shy but lovingly present. He has been around children, and especially loves those that are calm and respectful of dogs. He has shown desire to chase cats, but not to harm them, and has been playful or neutral with all of our dogs here, including other intact males.

Rivian is available for adoption in Greenville SC. Out of area adopters must travel in to meet their dogs.

More about this rescue

Red’s House Rescue Network is a working breed rescue based out of Greenville County SC. Our primary focus are breeds that are “too much,” the breeds that deteriorate quickly in shelter environments, and sometimes have a bad rap. These dogs are capable of being incredible members of society, as pets, sport dogs, and working partners. RHRN has placed dogs in IGP, PSA, Service Dog, & Police Department homes, among others. We also of course have lower drive dogs that make wonderful pets.

We aim to place all of our dogs with basic manners/OB in place, and we are a forever asset to our alumni’s- for any issues or needs post adoption, we will ALWAYS help, and we will ALWAYS take our dogs back if there is a need. Once an animal passes through Red’s House, they’ll always have a home!
