Nikita is a three year old Australian Shepherd who has spent her whole life on a peaceful 14 acre farm. She lost her person this year, when my mom passed away. Nikita went to live with a close family friend. She had known their dog for years, so we hoped it would be a smooth transition, but the home is loud, busy, and full of other animals, and it has been overwhelming for her. She loves people with her whole heart. Every age and stage. She lets kids climb on her, cuddle her, and she follows them around like she has a job to do. Outside is her happy place. She could run, explore, take a dip in water, then curl up on your pillow for a nap. She is smart and very motivated by attention and praise. She would do well with structure and someone who enjoys a dog with an active mind. At this time, Nikita does not do well with other dogs. She is not aggressive in general, but she reacts when she is stressed and has bitten the resident dog in her current home. I strongly believe this is rooted in grief and confusion combined with being forced into a shared space after living her entire life alone with one person. Cats are unknown. Farm animals have always been fine. She needs a calm home with no other dogs, where she can have time to decompress, feel safe, and remember that she is loved.
