Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Samwise is a big, handsome Rottweiler with a friendly heart and a playful spirit. Since arriving at the shelter, he has shown himself to be generally social and outgoing with caretaker staff. He was a little unsure with handling at first, but he has quickly warmed up and now readily comes in and out of his kennel and seeks out attention. On leash, Samwise can be strong and may pull at times—his size and enthusiasm mean he’ll benefit from continued leash training—but no major issues have been noted. He already knows the command “sit” and enjoys engaging with his handlers. Samwise loves attention and will both allow and solicit petting. Due to his large size, he can be a bit boisterous when excited, so he’ll do best with someone who can help guide his manners. He enjoys playing with toys and will happily engage, though he’s just as content dropping the toy and exploring the room. During his food evaluation, Samwise showed signs of potential food guarding. Because of this, it’s recommended that he be given space while eating to help prevent any negative interactions. With proper management and guidance, many dogs do very well in a home environment. Samwise has also met another dog, and did fairly well overall. He was initially alert but tolerant, handled corrections appropriately, and eventually loosened up enough to engage in playful behaviors. He may do well with another dog after a proper introduction, and any potential canine siblings should meet him beforehand to ensure compatibility. If you’re looking for a loyal, playful, and affectionate companion and are prepared to work with a large, strong dog, Samwise could be the perfect addition to your family.

2 - Once at the shelter, walk through to see available pets and then visit with the one(s) you are considering adopting. A volunteer or staff member will facilitate the visit and tell you more about the pet you’re visiting.
3 - Once you decide that you would like to adopt, head to the main lobby to complete our brief adoption questionnaire and wait to speak with one of our adoption counselors to go over any questions you might have. We'll go over all of the available behavioral and medical history of the pet you want to adopt.
4 - Complete your adoption! Most pets can go home the day they are adopted, but some must be picked up one or two days later after their spay/neuter appointment.

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter is Fairfax County’s only open-access municipal shelter. We take in stray animals in need, owner surrendered companion animals when the owner is no longer willing or able to care for them, and animals who have been seized or taken into custody by Animal Protection Police. We accept all companion animals from Fairfax County who are in need of care, regardless of health, age, temperament, or history. We do not euthanize for space or length of time, and all adoptable animals are given every opportunity for a new home and family. We have an incredibly compassionate staff, and we also have vibrant and active volunteer and foster programs. We know that every animal who enters our shelter will be given the best care and shown boundless love while they are in our care, and while they wait for their forever family to adopt them.
