My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Candied Yams
2 years • 48 lbs • Low Rider • 18k Gold Diva
Fostered in Hudson County, NJ
Adoption Areas: NY, NJ, CT, PA, ME, VT, VA, DE, MD, RI, NH
Apply at: houndsinpounds.org

Meet Candied Yams — the lowrider snack who proves that good things don’t just come in small packages… they come in short, shiny, loafshaped ones.

She may be low to the ground, but her standards are skyscraperlevel. This girl doesn’t do “basic.” She doesn’t do “good enough.” She doesn’t even do “goldplated.” No, no. We are talking 18k GOLD, baby — the kind of shine that makes jewelers whisper, rappers take notes, and haters suddenly remember they “left something in the car.”

Candied Yams is solid gold, inside and out. A diva. A short queen . A woman of substance with the comedic timing of someone who’s been secretly doing standup at night. Her humor is so sharp it could make a professional comic sweat.

And the sweetness? Imagine marshmallowtopped candied yams at Christmas dinner — but with legs, a tail, and a personality that could power the Eastern seaboard .
She’s basically Christmas dessert with a pulse.

She’s also:
Dog friendly
Cat friendly
Humanadoring
Built like a limitededition Christmas panettone — festive, compact, and surprisingly supportive
A lifestyle upgrade — your home’s aesthetic improves the moment she enters
A walking vibe — part strut, part waddle, part “I know you’re looking at me and you should be”

Her zoomies? Not aerodynamic — she’s a loaf, and she moves like one. Think: a very determined brioche with legs.

And listen… Sir MixALot would absolutely approve  Baby. Got. Back. She’s serving holiday ham energy from every angle.

Her presence? Commanding. Her energy? Somewhere between Beyoncé walking onstage and a holiday fruitcake that refuses to be ignored.

Candied Yams is the only low rider who could pull up to the curb and make valet parking rethink their career path.

If you’ve been searching for a companion who is equal parts snack, comedian, and luxury brand, Candied Yams is ready to bless your home with her glow .

Apply to adopt your new favorite Christmas side dish at houndsinpounds.org.

Additional adoption info

Our mission is to find the best possible homes for the animals in our care. Many of them have been through severe hardship, mistreatment or neglect, and that makes it even more important that we do our best for them. This means that we have to have guidelines because not every adopter is right for every animal. We try to do right by every person who comes our way looking for a new family pet. But sometimes we have to say “no” to a potential adopter. Our animals do not have a say in where they go; since we speak for those who have no voice, we must do it well. Our rejection of an adoption application is no reflection on the adopter. Everyone who wants to adopt an animal from a shelter or rescue group is special because they open their homes to those in need. But, while we try to meet the needs of everyone, our clients are the animals. They have no one else. We appreciate your understanding.

More about this rescue

The mission of Hounds in Pounds (HIP), is to end the daily killing of thousands of adoptable dogs in the United States. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New Jersey and Georgia and we rely 100% on donations.

HIP has a multi-faceted approach to achieving our mission, combining rescue, adoption, spay/neuter outreach and public education. Dogs rescued by Hounds in Pounds are transported to private veterinarians for proper medical treatment, where they are vetted, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and tested for heartworm before being placed into new, loving homes. We work as a team, communicating from sunrise to sundown to manage the many moving pieces that make our work successful.

Each dog we pull to safety is a member of our family and is treated with the utmost love and respect. We are a lifeline for thousands of dogs that otherwise wouldn’t stand a chance. Many of the dogs we rescue are cases that no one else will take, as our motto at HIP is to “never say never”. To be clear, we are working for them. These dogs are our heroes, and we look to them for hope, inspiration and sometimes the strength to keep going. We also consider our followers, donors, adopters, rescue partners and the rescue community a direct extension of our team. Without each of these moving parts, Hounds in Pounds wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

As one can imagine, the costs associated with running an operation of this magnitude are extraordinary. We fulfill our mission by collaborating with local shelters, veterinarians, boarding facilities, transporters, and local businesses, and through the generosity of donors and supporters. It is thanks to our dedicated volunteers and the benevolent donations of our HIP family of supporters that any of this is possible.
