My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

***Currently located in Downey, CA***

Hi, I’m Nopal!
I'm a proud member of the Vivero litter! My five siblings and I were found at a plant nursery (in Spanish: Vivero), and that’s how we got our names - inspired by plants and chosen with love by the kind people who found us. We were born under a pile of wood and trash, but even in those tough conditions, our mom did everything she could to keep us safe. She was incredibly thin and had a leg injury, yet she never stopped caring for us.

When the Surfers for Strays team arrived, everything changed. They brought food, medicine, and relief — not just once, but again and again. Our mom finally got the help she desperately needed, and we pups received medical care too (including that mysterious thing humans call sterilization ). When space finally opened at the shelter, we moved in — a big, exciting step toward a better life!

I’ve grown into a gentle, thoughtful, and very sweet boy. I’m friendly and affectionate - politely saying hi to new people. Plus I love spending time with other dogs and I get along wonderfully with cats!

In my foster home I’ve been doing amazing. I’ve recently discovered toys (balls are pretty fun, not gonna lie ), I love to run and play, and I am also excellent at enjoying downtime. I’m crate trained, sleep peacefully in my "safe space" overnight, and I am potty trained. I have figured out how to use a doggy door and have had no accidents in the house! My foster momma says I listen well and genuinely want to do the right thing.

I walk nicely on leash and I’ve been exposed to many new environments since joining my foster home in LA. I’ve handled these situations beautifully and continue to gain confidence every day. I’ve also spent time around young children (ages 1–6) and did wonderfully according to my foster momma! I was playful, gentle, and happy to be included in the fun.

I am a sensitive boy and appreciate slow introductions, especially with men. I do best when allowed to set the pace and when affection isn’t forced. Once I trust you, though? Oh boy do I turn into a cuddle bug who loves hugs, pets, and closeness. When that trust clicks, my love runs deep and steady. My ideal family would be one that understands gentle dogs, who respects my space, avoids directly staring at me at first, and lets trust grow naturally. Because once I feel safe, I truly blossom!

I’m a great dog with a big heart, a calm soul, and so much love to give. I can’t wait to find my people — the ones who will see me for who I am and let me continue growing into the confident, happy boy I’m meant to be.

With love and hope,
Nopal

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
