My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Ava, a stunning, large mixed-breed girl with a short tan and black coat and a heart as soft as her big brown eyes. Ava may be a little shy at first, but give her a bit of time—and maybe a taste of cream cheese—and you’ll see her warm up into the sweetest, most devoted companion.

Ava is a gentle, affectionate soul who adores quiet company, cozy and slow, easy affection. She’s might not be high-energy, but she’s high-hearted—overflowing with love for the people she trusts. Despite her size, she firmly believes she’s a lap dog and will insist on snuggling close whenever she can!

When Ava first came to PAWS, she was reserved, but with the support of our team and patient volunteers, she has formed incredibly strong bonds and shown what a loving, loyal friend she can be. She’s still building confidence in the outside world and learning leash skills, but with guidance and encouragement, she’s making great progress and will thrive in a calm, patient home.

Ava has a history of living with one dog and would likely do best as the shining star of her forever home, where she can feel safe and adored. Fully vetted, spayed, and ready to meet her perfect match, Ava is looking for a patient, kind-hearted family who will let her blossom at her own pace—and who won’t mind a little lap-stealing along the way!

A little patience, a lot of love, and maybe some cream cheese—Ava is ready to show you just how special she is!

More about this shelter

Our Mission:

To advocate for animal welfare by providing adoption and rehabilitation services to the animals under our care, while fostering a more educated community.

Our Vision:

The vision of PAWS of Coronado is for every animal to have a safe and loving forever home.

Our Commitment:

The Pacific Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is committed to the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of all treatable and manageable animals at our facility and those receiving care through our foster care network. PAWS works hard to find permanent homes through our adoption services and animal rescue partnerships. Since its founding, PAWS has not euthanized any healthy animals with treatable conditions. PAWS is a member of the San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition (SDAWC) and has adopted the Asilomar Accords to clarify the standard of care and what constitutes ‘healthy, treatable/manageable and ‘unhealthy/untreatable’ conditions in shelter animals. The SDAWC reached ‘zero euthanasia of treatable animals’ in July of 2015. “Getting to Zero” is the San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition’s commitment to reaching zero euthanasia of healthy or treatable shelter animals in our community. Each member of the SDAWC provides data to the Shelter Animals Count: The National Database to ensure transparency around our work.

Unlike other animal welfare organizations, PAWS has a jurisdictional responsibility to provide animal sheltering and pet licensing for all domestic animals in Coronado. PAWS receives all animals that are legal to own within the Coronado city limits including dogs, cats, pet exotic mammals, birds, and reptiles. Sadly, many of the animals arriving to PAWS have significant medical and/or behavioral conditions that render them ‘unhealthy/untreatable’ as defined in the Asilomar Accords. PAWS only places treatable, manageable animals up for adoption.

PAWS endeavors to rescue all ‘unhealthy/untreatable’ animals through providing a range of services including standard of care diagnostics, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, behavior modification and specialty interventions. Through these efforts, PAWS has saved many ‘unhealthy/untreatable’ animals and we take great pride in the support we are able to provide for all animals in Coronado.
PAWS appreciates your donations that support our mission and all our volunteers who help make this life-saving work possible.
