My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi, I’m Poke, a 3 year old hunka hunka burnin love! I’m a big boy with a big heart, who will definitely capture yours. I was surrendered by my previous owners because I did not get along with the toddler in the house, so I will definitely need a home with older (12 and up) kids who will be gentle and respectful of my boundaries, or without kids.
I have a sweet and loving personality, and I’m a very chatty guy! I really like to play, particularly with my ball track toy. I love pets, and when I’m in the right mood I enjoy being picked up for cuddles. I also love the top perch of a treehouse, especially if it’s situated next to a window. A good session of bird watching followed by a cozy nap is my perfect afternoon!
I was brought in to the rescue as a very young kitten and bottle fed, and probably because of that, I LOVE people. I love talking to them, playing with them, and being near them. I’m not a huge fan of other cats, but I have gotten along well with the cats in my current foster as long as they don’t bully me. I think I’d be okay in a home with other kitties, as long as proper slow introductions were followed (my helpers can talk you through that!) I’m not sure if I’ve ever been around dogs.
I am on a special diet, Royal Canin S/O Calm, because of a tendency to develop crystals and urinary issues, not unusual in male cats. I’ve responded really well to this food and have had no issues since starting it. I will need to stay on it lifelong to keep me at my healthiest. I eat mostly wet food, with some dry.
I’m also FIV positive, but please don’t let that scare you—there’s a LOT of misinformation about FIV out there. With proper care and an indoor ONLY life, I can live just as long and healthy of a life as my non-FIV buddies. Because FIV is spread only through deep bite wounds and mating, I can safely live with other non-FIV cats, with proper introductions, of course. Check out https://fivcats.org/ for some great information on FIV, and feel free to ask my helpers any questions too!
Because I’ve already experienced tremendous loss and upheaval, I really need my new family to be my forever family. If you are willing to commit to me for my whole life, I will love you more than you can even imagine! My helpers love my big green eyes, sweet expressive face and little chirpy meows, and they’d love for you to come meet me and get the full Poke experience!

More about this rescue

🐾 Our Mission at Billy the Kidden Rescue 🐾

Billy the Kidden Rescue is a VDACS-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded in 2014 and supported by a network of over 60 active foster homes across Hampton Roads.

Our mission is to improve the lives of displaced cats and reduce the feral cat population in our community by socializing outdoor-born and feral kittens—transforming them into loving, adoptable pets and placing them in safe, forever homes.

💙 Our Heart is in TNR
We are proud advocates of TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return)—the humane, effective method of managing community cats. Through this program, feral cats are:

✔️ Trapped
✔️ Neutered or Spayed
✔️ Vaccinated
✔️ Ear-Tipped (as a universal sign they've been fixed)
✔️ Returned to live safely in their outdoor colonies without contributing to overpopulation.

We are actively working to promote legal and social acceptance of TNR in Hampton Roads.

🐱 Feral Kitten Socialization
Our feral kitten socialization program is one of a kind—with a 90% success rate in helping feral-born kittens become affectionate, in-home pets. Through experienced fostering, patience, and love, these kittens learn to trust, play, and thrive indoors.

💪 Get Involved!
We’re always looking for passionate animal lovers to join our team. Help us make a difference by becoming a:
