My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

1/5/26. 3-year-old KIRA needs your help to find her furever family. Her owner was devastated to have to surrender her but had no choice due to a life-threatening illness in herself. We met KIRA today, and she is an absolute sweetheart with a tremendous amount of love to give to her people. She likes other dogs but may prefer to be the only dog and is good with children. She lived with a little Shih Tzu, so she would be fine with another calm little dog.

Here is what her foster had to say about her: “Kira is a sweet, affectionate love bug who will happily become your shadow. She is a classic velcro Doberman who loves being close to her people and truly thrives on companionship. Kira is happiest when she’s with her humans.

Kira is extremely smart, very alert, and eager to engage. She loves enrichment and hasn’t met a chew toy or food puzzle she didn’t enjoy! With good supervision, structure, and consistency, she will settle in beautifully. Loyal, loving, and devoted, Kira would be an excellent match for someone who works from home or has a flexible schedule and enjoys an interactive canine companion.”

Kira has a manageable autoimmune condition that is well controlled with medication (and she happily takes her meds with baked sweet potato!)

I had the pleasure of being Kira’s temporary foster mom and cannot say enough wonderful things about this gentle giant. She holds a special place in my heart, and I hope she finds the loving forever home she truly deserves!

11/01/25. Kira is a beautiful female Doberman with a heart as big as her elegant frame. She’s known for her gentle and affectionate nature, especially when it comes to children. Kira thrives in a loving home environment where she can be part of the family, giving and receiving the warmth and companionship that she craves. Her calm and loyal demeanor makes her a wonderful addition to any household looking for a sweet and steady canine companion.

This lovely girl is incredibly friendly with people and enjoys being the center of attention. She loves affection in all its forms — from cuddles on the couch to belly rubs and soft kisses. Kira is happiest when she’s surrounded by her family, taking part in daily routines and sharing her affectionate energy with everyone around her. She’s social by nature and truly enjoys being included in household activities, always ready to show her love with a wagging tail and soulful eyes.

Although Kira is tolerant of other dogs, she prefers to spend her time with people rather than engaging in play with other pets. She’s polite and well-mannered around fellow dogs but is happiest when she has her humans all to herself. Now, Kira is patiently waiting for her forever home — a place where she can continue to share her love, loyalty, and companionship with a family who will cherish her just as much as she will cherish them.

8/28/25. "Kira" is a young Doberman in Deland who has a skin autoimmune condition that is controlled by daily medication. We have been helping her and her young owner, who unfortunately has a life-threatening condition and loves her dog very much, so we kept them together as long as possible. But now her owner is declining, so we need to either get Kira into a foster home near Deland or bring her down to Fort Lauderdale. She has lived with a male Shih Tzu and takes a moment to warm up to strangers. If you can help, please contact us. Donations towards her care are appreciated.

Not every dog is available for adoption or need a foster - some are wards of the rescue (usually due to medical reasons, but sometimes behavioral). These dogs will always be supported by DRL. We welcome financial support for these dogs. Here are links to foster and adoption applications for those dogs who need a foster home or adoptive home.
