My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Scarlet! Scarlet was rescued from a high-kill shelter in New Mexico in April 2025, and while we truly believed she’d be scooped up right away, this sweet girl is somehow still waiting for her forever family. Month after month she’s watched other dogs find their homes while she’s quietly stayed behind, wagging her tail and hoping her turn is coming. Scarlet hasn’t given up — and neither have we — because we know the right person is out there, ready to see what an incredible, loving dog she is.

Scarlet is a gorgeous 35 pound, now 2 year old Australian Shepherd / Cattle Dog mix that is nothing but pure love. Scarlet's breeds were identified by the New Mexico veterinarians...all we know for certain is that this sweet girl is irresistible!

Scarlet's foster had the following to say about this sweet girl:

* * * *

"Scarlet is an absolute gem! She’s incredibly sweet, affectionate, and loves people — especially our kids (ages 10 and 13). From the start, she’s been friendly, playful, and super loving with them. I wouldn't recommend kids younger than 10, as she is jumpy and bouncy, but she absolutely loves our kiddos.

Scarlet is pretty much potty trained now! She lets us know when she needs to go out.

Scarlet is so smart and very easy to train, as she is super food motivated.

As you can see from the photos and videos, Scarlet LOVES our dogs and gets along with them and plays with them and cuddles with them. Just at first it did take a proper, slow introduction and a few days for them to become friends. When it comes to other dogs, Scarlet just needs a slow introduction. She is not a fan of new dogs until she gets to know them. Scarlet has been with us for almost a year now and besides the first introduction back in April 2025, she has not had ANY bad reactions to my dogs. They're best friends! With a little patience and structure, she truly blossoms. It took about 5 days for her to really start getting along with our two resident dogs, but now they are completely bonded.
She’s worth it—she just needs time to build trust and settle in.

Scarlet sleeps in bed with us and is a total cuddler. She likes to curl up right near my husband's pillow.

One other note to share with potential adopters is that she truly is 35 lbs. She looks bigger in her photos, but she really is such a smaller, medium size!

Scarlet is a loving, loyal girl with so much to give. She’ll thrive in a home that understands her needs and can give her a little time to warm up. Once she feels safe, her sweet, snuggly personality shines through—and she becomes a total heart-stealer."

* * * *

As Scarlet becomes comfortable in her forever home, she'll blossom and become a fuzzy ball of good-will that loves to please. The happier her family is with her behavior, the more Scarlet will shine with her accomplishments. Farfel's would like to see our wonderful girl in a home that includes her in family time and activities (and some couch-time with belly rubs would be absolutely perfect!) as well as taking that extra step to participate in positive reinforcement / force free virtual or in-person obedience classes. These classes successfully teach a smart and cooperative dog like Scarlet the skills to accompany her family out into the world with excellent behavior. Farfel's Rescue is happy to provide a list of approved virtual and in-person force-free trainers in your area.

Scarlet will be a loving and devoted companion for active retirees who have the time and desire to be best friends with a silly, fun-loving and irresistible dog. She would love to have another gentle and fun dog to play with but it's not mandatory if her people are nurturing and involved.

Scarlet would also do well with a younger family that works from a home-based office. She would bask in the attention and periodic cuddles throughout the day that this life-style brings.

Scarlet has been fully vetted, spayed, and is up to date on her vaccinations. This supports Farfel's commitment to adopting out only healthy dogs.

Scarlet is available for adoption now. Applications are currently being accepted for this sweet and very loving best friend and can be found at http://farfels.com/farfels-res. cue/adoption-form/. If interested, please fill out completely and submit.

**PLEASE NOTE** If you're truly interested in adopting Scarlet please be sure to fill out our Farfel's Rescue adoption application found at the link above or at farfels.com. Adoption site applications such as Petfinder and Adoptapet don't provide enough information and therefore aren't useful. Our Farfel's application is the only initial tool that we have to determine a great match for this very deserving dog. We're sorry, but in most cases, we're unable to get back to those that don't submit our Farfel's Rescue adoption application. Thanks very much for choosing rescue.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Farfel's Rescue is a fully foster based rescue, and offers a one week trial with every adoption. We feel that this is much more beneficial to not only the dog, but the adopter too. We believe that only getting 20-30 minutes with a dog before deciding on a lifetime commitment is not a fair amount of time to the adopter, or the dog. Therefore we give adopters one week with the dog to assure it is the right fit, and offer a full refund of their adoption fee should it not workout within the week trial.

An Adoption Application and an Adoption Contract must be completed before any dog can begin their one week foster. Our average adoption fee is $695. This amount serves to cover vetting, spay/neuter, all vaccinations, temperament testing, transport, a microchip, harness, food, and treats.
Our dogs come from Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and rural Colorado.

Go meet their pets

Pets are transported from the southern states every week. Almost 100% of the time, the dogs are spoken for as a result of adoption applications that can be referenced under Adoption at farfelsrescue.com. We study the applications. If the app indicates there is a match, followed up by a home visit and reference checks, the process moves to the next step. The adopter is committing to a one week foster (of course the dog can be returned at any time prior), and can then choose to finalize the adoption.

More about this rescue

We own a pet boutique named Farfel's Farm & Rescue on Pearl Street in Boulder, Colorado. We have had the good fortune to find our niche in the Boulder community and experience success. We felt it very important to "pay it forward" in gratitude. We couldn't think of a better endeavor than to save dogs who were out of time in the southern states, yet had been identified with great temperaments. We dedicate our efforts to their good health and ultimate wonderful, permanent homes.
