My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Hank
Hank is a handsome boy! He found himself at our shelter after being abandoned by his owner. The shelter has really been tough on Hank. He hates it, plain and simple. It feels like doggie prison for a dog who didn’t do anything except be neglected by humans. This handsome dog is a free spirit, but we can tell he is looking to bond with his person and be part of a pack. He likes other dogs and enjoys being with them.
Hank has an easy-going temperament when away from the shelter. He’s friendly and calm. He’s got some pent-up energy now and we’re looking for ways to help him run it off safely. Hank is a year or two old. He should be running and playing, instead he’s cooped up in a kennel confined to the daily rhythms of shelter life. He is a gorgeous dog, just a wonder to look at with a strong head, a gorgeous coat and athletic build. He looks like a mix of lab, cur, and American bulldog. He is athletic and would do best in an active household. He is very smart too and will create his own fun if no one is there to guide him. Hank seems like a dog who would love to train in agility or parkour. He has crazy jumping and climbing skills and the focus and heart to be a champion. Hank loves attention. He wants to know he matters. He needs a family experienced with dogs to guide him. Hank has incredible potential. He’s not been guided or cared for very well so far as we can tell. For the person who understands dogs and is willing to work with and train Hank and give him the love and security he needs, Hank is a keeper. He will require a good bit of exercise, but his love and loyalty will be unquestioned. We think he is house-trained too. We’re still getting to know Hank and are working with him, but if you are looking for an exceptional dog to welcome to your heart and home and build a bond with, Hank is your guy. He could use a second chance to be the best dog possible.
Get your application in for Hank at www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org. Onour home page, please select “How To Adopt” to download the dog application. Please email our shelter (smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net) and leave a message to make sure we received your application. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out-of-state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship, nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals.
Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are either owner relinquished rescued from area Animal Controls or high kill shelters. The facility usually operates at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process begins with the submission of an application which is used to gather information and initiate conversation with the adopting person/family. The form also assists us with assessing the environment for suitability and safety in the placement of our residents. The application is the first step in the approval process, followed by veterinarian reference check, landlord approval confirmation if relevant and a home visit which may be done physically or virtually depending on the distance from the shelter. The approval process can be initiated either before or after a visit to the shelter to visit our residents. The application for dogs is located on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271213192922944/?type=3&theater . For cat application, go to: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271223856255211/?type=3&theater . The forms will be automated for online submission through a new website currently under construction with an anticipated launch date of no later than Nov 2016. Requirements for adoption are specific to the needs of the animal in addition to standard checks for safety issues. Adopters must come to the shelter once approved to take their adopted pet home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Submitting the form is neither a guarantee of adoption nor an entitlement to "first come, first served" in the selection process of safely and appropriately placing our residents. Decision to approve/not approve an adopter(s) is based on the needs of the dog, not the needs of the adopter. The application should be downloaded before printing. The completed form can be returned through Facebook Messages, emailing to: smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net or delivery to the shelter. The process usually takes 1 to 3 business days but can be slowed by not completing all of the questions, difficulty in reaching people relevant to approval and scheduling a home visit. Our residents must be returned to us at any point in time if the adoption is no longer suitable/safe for the pet or circumstances have changed to where a new home is needed. A contract must be signed to complete the adoption process. Standard fees for dogs are $100 and for cats $85. Some fees are subsidized in various amounts as low as $25 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for dogs and $20 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for cats . All of our animals are spay/neutered, have age appropriate vaccines and are free of internal parasites. Dogs are tested for heart worms and put on monthly prevention. Cats are tested for FIV/FeLV.

More about this shelter

Charles Smithgall Humane Society (est 1994) is a small no-kill shelter which utilizes our adoption center, social media and offsite events to seek safe and appropriate homes for our residents. Our mission is to provide safe sanctuary and all standard preventive care procedures and veterinary services to the dogs and cats of our local communities Intakes are primarily owner relinquishments with some animals accepted from animal control when space is available. All potential adopters must be evaluated through our approval process. We are funded 100% by donations and fundraising events. With the exception of 2 kennel managers, our operations are totally managed with volunteers. We are always in need of donations and volunteers. We appreciate the sharing of our pets on social media as most of our adoptions have resulted through the resources of the internet.
