VANPELT NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!
Name: Vanpelt Best Guess for Breed: Beagle mix
Best Guess for Age: 8 years as of November 2025 SEX: Female
Approximate Weight: 28 lbs
Gets Along With: Other dogs! She should not go to a home with cats as she will chase them. We haven't seen her with kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!
Currently Living at: DC area foster home
Special adoption considerations: Vanpelt is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but has already been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment.
We are happy to talk more in depth about heartworm disease and treatment. Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!
Vanpelt is Looking For: Her forever home! This sweet older girl landed in the shelter through no fault of her own. She may have some white in her muzzle, but her sniffer is strong and she's got pep in her step - she's eager for sniffy walks and world exploration with her humans! A cushy dog bed, quality kibble, and lots of snuggles round out her wish list.
What do you say? Do you have space in your home and your heart for Vanpelt?
What My Foster Says About Me: Vanpelt is a very sweet dog with a true hound personality. Don't let her age fool you - this girl can move and climb! She is GREAT in her crate. Sleeps awesome throughout the night (snores), and did great today when I had to leave the house. She walks well on a leash but will need time to stop and sniff. No cats for this dog as she will try to chase them. As for winter attire, Vanpelt looks awesome in plaid.
Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training.
TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog
