My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Barkley G is a big, goofy sweetheart with a heart just as large as his paws.

When it’s time to head out outside, Barkley sits politely and waits to be leashed like a true gentleman. He’s excited to leave his kennel but remains easy to handle, and while he may pull a bit outside, it’s nothing unmanageable. He loves checking in with his handler, especially if treats are involved, and his food motivation (plus a perfect sit) will make training a breeze.

Barkley has done wonderfully on day trips and meets, showing himself to be social, gentle, and comfortable exploring new places. He enjoys meeting people, checks in often, and made everyone he met feel safe and loved.

This sweet boy is ready for his forever home! One filled with love, treats, adventures, and someone who wants a loyal, affectionate companion by their side. Anyone lucky enough to adopt Barkley G is gaining a truly special dog. Come meet him at ACCT Philly, open daily from 10 am to 6 pm

BEHAVIOR
01/13/2026 volunteer notes: I walked this big goofy boy for the second time tonight and I’m in love. When you go to leash him, he sits politely and calmly waiting for you. Once he’s leashed he is excited to get out of his kennel, but easy to handle. Outside, he pulls a little bit, but nothing crazy. He also likes to look back at his handler frequently if he knows you have treats. He is very food motivated and has a perfect sit. We went into one of the play yards and he had a blast running around and playing with toys. He can be a little jumpy, but will stop if you ignore him. He is so sweet and just wants love when I crouched down to pet him he placed his head on my arm and his tail was wagging non stop as I pet him. This sweet boy can’t wait to be in his forever home.

01/11/2026 day trip notes: I wanted to follow up about my day trip with Barkley and share a few photos in case you can use them for his adoption profile — he was truly wonderful.

Barkley is an exceptional dog. He was so happy to be outside and exploring, and he handled the whole outing beautifully. He was extremely affectionate, gentle, and checked in with me often. I felt completely safe with him the whole time, and he was very sweet with people we passed.

He was very social and tried to follow me toward a bodega door — he seems comfortable around people and interested in exploring new places. He showed a strong interest in food, which is very normal for strays — but he responded well when redirected. He’s motivated by treats, which will make him easy to train. Anyone would be lucky to adopt him.

Although I’m not in a position to adopt right now, I would love to continue helping him. I’m happy to take him on more day trips whenever he’s available.

He’s a wonderful dog, and I’d love to support him however I can.

01/08/2026 staff notes:
Kennel Presentation: standing in side bank with soft eyes, ears to the side and a wiggly body. Room a treat gently through the bars.

Leash Skills: easy to leash, walks with minimal pulling and checks in with handler.

Sociability: very social boy! Leans in to all handling, gently jumps on to solicit attention. Food motivated, tried sticking his whole snoot in my treat pouch.

Play: n/a

Dog Interaction: had a good dropped leash meet with Star! Did become a little humpy towards the end of the meet.

Return to Kennel: went right back into side back without issue and unleashed.

Color Level: gold

Recommendations and considerations:

01/06/2026 Staff notes, playgroup: Growling at the gate, hackles, high tail, steerable w/ water, ears back and high tail in yard, stiff. Over correcting Gino.

01/05/2026 Medical staff notes: Absolute sweetest boy! Gentle with everyone, looks for attention. Snuggles right up to anyone he interacts with. Great for all medical interaction.

Our animal control officers provide service over 142.6 square miles to the city’s more than 1.5 million residents and ACCT Philly’s facility in North Philadelphia handles more than 17,000 of the city’s animals, from dogs and cats, to small animals, reptiles, birds and wildlife, annually.

In addition to animal control and sheltering, ACCT Philly is open 365 days a year for pet adoptions.
