Butterfree came to BARCS as a stray, and we’re still getting to know this sweet boy. His finder shared that Butterfree was friendly, did great in the car, and was comfortable around their 12-year-old child.
At the shelter, Butterfree can be a little shy as he builds confidence, but his gentle nature shines through. He is a 7-year-old, 51.2-lb boy with a calm, affectionate personality. Once he feels comfortable, he’ll happily roll over for belly rubs—a sure sign you’ve won him over. Butterfree loves working for treats and playing with toys in the yard. He seems housebroken, knows “sit,” and takes treats gently. He’s a good boy on his leash, and curious about passing dogs without being reactive.
Butterfree had the best day ever on his Dog’s Day Out adventure — and he absolutely stole hearts along the way! This sweet, friendly boy was a wonderful companion for the day, happily soaking up all the cuddles and pets he could get. Butterfree was a social butterfly when meeting new people, greeting everyone with a friendly demeanor. He wasn’t much of a barker, making him an easy and pleasant buddy for a day out on the town.
Butterfree enjoyed exploring Federal Hill Park and taking relaxed strolls around the Inner Harbor, taking in all the sights and smells. But hands down, his favorite part of the day? Getting a pup cup!
Butterfree is playful and bouncy with his dog pals, especially the girls. He may need to meet any doggie roommates to make sure they are a good match.
If you’re looking for a loving, people-friendly dog who enjoys adventures, affection, and the simple joys in life (especially treats!), Butterfree could be your perfect match.
Butterfree is in the comfort of a foster home, please email dogfosters@barcs.org to be connected with his foster family.
I`m a VIP because I`m still learning, and the shelter can be a tough place for dogs like me to shine. But I’ve got a whole team cheering me on!
Here are a few things the staff and volunteers are helping me with:
• Learning to make the right dog friends at the right pace • Picking up manners and basic cues • Learning that the world isn`t so scary
If you`re patient and open-hearted, I could be your best friend. I`m available for either adoption or foster—both will help me tremendously! When you visit, a staff member can walk you through what’s been working for me and how you can keep the progress going at home.

If you don’t see what you are looking for, please visit our shelter to meet your perfect match today! Adoption fees are $75; however, we offer several adoption packages listed here. Our adoption hours are Monday-Friday from 2-6 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

More about this shelter
BARCS is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization operating Maryland’s largest animal shelter and pet adoption center. We are an open admission shelter, granting refuge to every abandoned, neglected, abused, lost or surrendered animal that comes through our door. A staggering 30 or more animals are surrendered to BARCS every day. No matter what the circumstance, we do not turn away any animal in need of shelter, food, medical care and a loving touch. Yearly, this equates to more than 12,000 dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, and even wildlife and exotic animals that need care and placement.
