Meet this cutie pie Tinsel. Tinsel is a 3 month female Shih Tzu/Poodle, a small breed and will only get likely 10 inches tall and weighing in at 9-16 pounds full grown. Tinsel is a darling little puppy looking to find her perfect forever family.
Tinsel came to her foster family home at 10weeks old. She was sadly born in a puppy mill, and in puppy mills, no genetic testing is done on the parents, it’s all about breeding for maximum profits, and Tinsel was born with a front leg deformity. She was deemed unsellable and was slated to be destroyed. Thankfully Tinsel made her way to rescue and now has a bright future ahead of her. Tinsel’s front right leg is shorter than the rest and the foot is turned in. It doesn’t cause her any issues and she can get around just as well as her sister can. Tinsel has been checked out by the vet and there is no medical intervention needed for her leg. It doesn’t cause her any pain and doesn’t impair her mobility or get in her way. Tinsel having been born this way knows no difference and with this defect Tinsel still has a lot of confidence, is very playful, courageous and intelligent. She runs and walks without issue and does well using her 3 other legs to get around.
Tinsel has a beautiful thick red and white silky soft coat. The Shih Tzu and Poodle breeds are a very high grooming maintenance dog that will require regular brushing, as well will require professional grooming approximately every 6 weeks. They are a low shedding dog, so you won’t see their hair lying around all your furniture all the time as long as you keep up with their grooming.
Anyone interested in Tinsel needs to live within one hour of Cambridge, Ont as she must be returned to our vet at six months of age to be spayed. She will be adopted out on a contract that stipulates this, and it is mandatory. This is covered in the adoption fee.
Tinsel is a great choice if you’re looking for a playful, friendly, gentle and affectionate dog. She came to us terrified of people and places, having received no positive socialization while in the puppy mill. We have been working on exposing her and her sister to kindness, affection and quality care. She loves to be held and cuddled and will sit on your lap or cuddled in your arms for as long as you care to have her. She is just nervous of being approached and reached for…in the mills, handling is rough and little good happens when they are grabbed for…so this is a work in progress to teach her that people reaching for her brings good things. Tinsel will require an adult only home right now that is quiet and calm where she can continue to gain confidence. She will be a dog that will be good with kids in the future, given more time to mature and be socialized, she just needs to be the focus right now and live in a quiet home without little hands grabbing at her. Anyone interested in her needs to be patient and continue the work we are doing with her to teach her that people are kind…she loves affection and cuddles and gives the sweetest kisses and most adorable tail wags when she is held and cuddled.
Tinsel will be expected to attend obedience school like any other dog and this will be great for her further confidence building. She is easy to train with positive reinforcement methods as she is food motivated so she will do great in class.
Tinsel needs to be house trained and crate trained. Her adoptive family will need to be capable of taking this on. When we got her she was so terrified of the world around her and it was bitter cold outside for such a teeny puppy, so training her to potty outside is just starting now. She is getting better with doing her duty outside during her potty breaks but again, this is a work in progress and her family must have a schedule that can accommodate puppy training. She gives clues that you can pick up on when she needs to go, as she will run around as if she is chasing her tail. The thing with puppies in a new home, they have to get use to new routines, so it is not unusual for accidents to happen for the first while. A puppy needs 100% supervision when not in their crates so any accidents in the home are going to be human error as he wasn’t being watched. Puppies are a lot of work and anyone interested in Tinsel needs to have the time and schedule for a puppies needs. She can only hold it in her crate for a few hours at a time so she needs to have someone around throughout the day to let her out.
Tinsel would do fine in a house, condo or apartment. She will not need a lot of space since she will be a small dog. Just remember she will need a lot of outside potty breaks, so if in a high rise expect to go out on the half hour for the first bit. Her outdoor environment should be quieter and not hectic and busy as this will be too much for a puppy just out of a puppy mill. She needs a gradual introduction to the world around her.
Tinsel’s foster home has another small pup as well as older dogs. We are looking for a family for her that will have a dog sibling that is good natured, puppy friendly, and small or medium sized. She gains confidence from her foster dog siblings and does rely them for some guidance and its great for her to play with an equally sized playmate. Another confident dog in the home will be a wonderful role model for her and will be so beneficial for her settling in and gaining confidence.
Daily work is needed on her physical and mental exercise. Even with her being a small dog, she still likes her daily small walks as it helps with her confidence. Her family will need to dedicate time for this throughout the day as well take her to training classes. Her walks are very short now as she is a wee pup but as she matures she will need to go on multiple longer walks a day to be happy.
Tinsel will sleep in her crate overnight and nap in it during day. She will need to be in her crate for day naps to monitor her potty breaks. Tinsel loves to run, play tug-a-war and chew on her toys/bones. She has no problem occupying herself with toys. Other than our dogs Tinsel has not had a chance to be social with other dogs, however she does a super job with polite introductions and manners. She will not be a suitable dog for doggy day care or dog parks. This would be too confusing and over stimulating her. Her people need to have the time for her and be able to pay attention to her and exercise her rather than rely on day cares . Tinsel is a good puppy, but a puppy none the less and puppies are tiring and need constant support while they grow and navigate the world.
Overall Tinsel is the epitome of what you would expect of a puppy. She is curious, sweet, fun, active and loyal, a companion animal through and through. Tinsel is going to make a family VERY happy and will be a great addition to anyone who has a lot of time and love to give. We cannot wait to see Tinsel in her forever home so that she can continue to give her whole heart to her humans.
