Huckleberries (Huckie) in Wayland, Michigan:
Do you love, love LOVE terrier energy? If so, meet Huckleberries (I call him Huckie). He’s an adorable, six and one half year old, scruffy, poofy, action packed, sweet but somewhat troubled Rough-Coated Jack Russel Terrier who is looking for his people. Like most JRT’s, Huckie is a WHOLE vibe packed into a 20 pound body shaped like a furry brick that looks like he always skips leg day. I took Huckie on as a foster project to give him a second chance at life. His mom sadly had to say goodbye as she is undergoing lengthy treatment for cancer and Huckie has some very specific needs. Huckie has made tremendous strides so it is time for him to find a family of his own who will love and cherish him despite (and hopefully even because of) his unique personality. Huckie CAN live with cats and other dogs. He tolerates them and will sometimes play but much prefers people. Huckie is NOT a good choice for small children. Older kids (14+) may be ok as long as they are capable of following long term direction/rules. Huckie was abused with a shock collar when he was younger, so he does have some trauma and issues that come along with that. I can help you understand what his triggers are and help you to help him continue to learn that the things he thinks are scary, really are OK. You must be willing and able to follow positive reinforcement training techniques. He does take a medication for anxiety (generic Clomipramine), one for allergies (well controlled - over the counter generic Cetirizine) and one for urinary leakage (completely controlled - Proin). I can get his adopters these medications at near cost. He could use a dental cleaning but is otherwise healthy, neutered, up to date on vaccines and heartworm preventative and ready to rock and roll! Huckie LOVES to go for walks and car rides. He is excellent in his crate! He is working on becoming 100% reliable with his housetraining with accidents becoming very infrequent and he always keeps his crate clean. He enjoys his version of “swimming” in our pond and has a splash pad that is his favorite. I am looking specifically for a home that understands terriers or other similar high drive, sensitive dogs and who will engage in positive reinforcement training. He loves snuggling, playing tug and knows how to sit, shake, down and spin. Please help save Huckie’s life! I can’t keep him forever. He needs YOU. He is a sweet, misunderstood, special boy with a huge heart. Please text Richelle Smith, DVM at 616-359-6321 if you are interested in this handsome boy or email at safeharborvet4547@gmail.com I am asking a small rehoming fee and a home visit and vet reference are required to adopt Huckie. Huckie is located in Wayland, Michigan and his adopter will need to travel to that area to get him.
