Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Mele Kalikimaka
Standard Schnauzer • 1 year • 35 lbs
Fostered in Carrollton, GA •
Available in GA
Neutered • Fully Vetted • Microchipped

If you’ve ever wanted a dog who feels like sunshine, palm trees, and a cheerful holiday greeting all rolled into one fuzzy package, meet Mele Kalikimaka — the Schnauzer who brings “the island greeting that we send to you” energy everywhere he goes.

He’s bright. He’s bouncy. He’s basically a walking holiday card with eyebrows.

Personality Vibes
Perky and springy — he’s got that “on a bright Hawaiian day” pep
Good with dogs — instant playmate
Good with cats — respectful and curious
Good with kids — gentle, goofy, and always game
Allaround good sport — the kind of dog who makes everything feel lighter
Excellent dog — truly, he’s the real deal

Why He’s Special
Mele Kalikimaka is joy in motion. He’s the kind of dog who trots into a room like he’s bringing warm breezes and good cheer with him. He’s young, smart, social, and full of personality — the perfect blend of fun, sweet, and Schnauzer sass.

If you’ve been dreaming of a companion who makes every day feel a little brighter, a little warmer, and a little more festive, this boy is ready to make that dream come true.

Bring Home the Cheer. Mele Kalikimaka is ready to jingle, wiggle, and wag his way into his forever home.

Additional adoption info

Our mission is to find the best possible homes for the animals in our care. Many of them have been through severe hardship, mistreatment or neglect, and that makes it even more important that we do our best for them. This means that we have to have guidelines because not every adopter is right for every animal. We try to do right by every person who comes our way looking for a new family pet. But sometimes we have to say “no” to a potential adopter. Our animals do not have a say in where they go; since we speak for those who have no voice, we must do it well. Our rejection of an adoption application is no reflection on the adopter. Everyone who wants to adopt an animal from a shelter or rescue group is special because they open their homes to those in need. But, while we try to meet the needs of everyone, our clients are the animals. They have no one else. We appreciate your understanding.

More about this rescue

The mission of Hounds in Pounds (HIP), is to end the daily killing of thousands of adoptable dogs in the United States. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New Jersey and Georgia and we rely 100% on donations.

HIP has a multi-faceted approach to achieving our mission, combining rescue, adoption, spay/neuter outreach and public education. Dogs rescued by Hounds in Pounds are transported to private veterinarians for proper medical treatment, where they are vetted, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and tested for heartworm before being placed into new, loving homes. We work as a team, communicating from sunrise to sundown to manage the many moving pieces that make our work successful.

Each dog we pull to safety is a member of our family and is treated with the utmost love and respect. We are a lifeline for thousands of dogs that otherwise wouldn’t stand a chance. Many of the dogs we rescue are cases that no one else will take, as our motto at HIP is to “never say never”. To be clear, we are working for them. These dogs are our heroes, and we look to them for hope, inspiration and sometimes the strength to keep going. We also consider our followers, donors, adopters, rescue partners and the rescue community a direct extension of our team. Without each of these moving parts, Hounds in Pounds wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

As one can imagine, the costs associated with running an operation of this magnitude are extraordinary. We fulfill our mission by collaborating with local shelters, veterinarians, boarding facilities, transporters, and local businesses, and through the generosity of donors and supporters. It is thanks to our dedicated volunteers and the benevolent donations of our HIP family of supporters that any of this is possible.
