My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Wilber 💙

Wilber spent three weeks living in a foster home, where he proved to be a wonderful, well-mannered companion. He greets new people politely, truly loves everyone he meets, and gets along beautifully with every dog he’s encountered. Whether meeting strangers or hanging out at home, Wilber’s joyful demeanor consistently impresses everyone around him.

In the home, Wilber settled in quickly. He enjoys car rides, has excellent leash manners, and is happy to relax quietly during the day—making him an ideal companion for someone who works from home. He’s also always up for a walk or adventure when it’s time to head out. Wilber is very food motivated and eager to learn; within just a few days he mastered cues like sit, down, come, and off. Any minor behaviors early on, such as counter surfing or marking outdoor structures, were easily redirected with gentle correction.

Wilber loves toys—especially chew and lick toys like peanut-butter-filled Kongs—and does a great job knowing which items are his and which are not. He did well being left unsupervised in the home for short periods and caused no trouble. He also adjusted wonderfully to living with both a calm senior dog and a playful young dog, showing great social skills and adaptability.

During his foster stay, Wilber spent time in public settings and met up to 15 new people a day. Time and again, people commented on his friendly nature and polite greetings—he truly seems to love making new friends.

When Wilber first arrived, he had a mild limp that was suspected to be related to arthritis in his back legs. With daily joint supplements, the limp resolved during his stay.

Important Note About Best Fit:
Wilber would do best in a home without small children. While he did well in many situations, there were a few supervised interactions with a toddler that showed he is not comfortable in that environment. Because of this, an adult-only home or one with older, respectful children would be the best match for him.

Wilber is a loving, smart, and affectionate dog who has so much to offer the right home. His foster family grew very attached to him and wants nothing more than to see him thrive in a home where he can feel safe, understood, and loved. All cats and dogs adopted from the Chequamegon Humane Association are spayed or neutered, up-to-date on age appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped. Dogs are tested for heartworm. A minimum adoption fee of $185 is required for adult dogs, puppy adoption fees start $300, and dogs over the age of 10 are $100. Adult cat adoption fees are $85, kittens under one year are $135, and cats over the age of 10 are $50.
