Meet Mckinna, a 10-month-old Terrier mix with a love for water, adventure, and making everyone around her smile. Mckinna found her way into the care of HSSM on October 27th, 2025 after being picked up as a stray by animal control in Gulfport. Since arriving at the shelter, she has quickly become a staff and volunteer favorite thanks to her sweet nature, goofy personality, and that infectious smile that makes it impossible not to fall in love. Mckinna is still learning the ropes of being a well mannered pup and is doing an amazing job. She has already mastered sit and come and is working hard on her leash skills. While walking politely is still a work in progress, she has made big improvements with patience, practice, and plenty of tasty treats. She is eager to learn, happy to please, and always ready for her next little victory. This water loving girl is dreaming of a home that enjoys the outdoors and isn’t afraid of a little adventure. Whether that means splashing around, exploring new places, or just enjoying life together, Mckinna is ready to be your loyal sidekick. She is up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, and will be spayed upon adoption if not already. Mckinna is patiently waiting for her perfect fur ever home and can’t wait to share all her love with the lucky family who finds her.
Mckinna's $300 adoption fee includes spay/neuter, up to date vaccines, microchip AND transport fee to a location near you. We currently have transportation to CT, MD, NJ, NY, PA, VA, GA, and TN. Please email transport@hssm.org for more information on transports!

--> If you are interested in adopting Mckinna please fill out our online application here: (https://forms.gle/nuKXoMu6gjS5DhFm8 - Dog). A staff member will reach out if your application is approved to discuss the adoption process. No fenced in yard required, and YES - we adopt to families with children! The adoption will not be final until the adoption contract is discussed and signed. Transports are arranged for specific dates, typically within 1-3 weeks of approving your application. Adopters will meet at a designated meeting spot to pick up their new companions. For further information, please first fill out the application referenced above.

More about this shelter

The Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) is the largest animal welfare organization in the state of Mississippi. HSSM’s facility was built using the nation’s leading Children’s Museums as models, with bright colors and oversized architectural sculptures. We offer: pet adoptions, foster program, return-to-owner efforts, spay/neuter and wellness services, volunteer program, pet transports, youth initiatives, a food pantry and pet retention program, an on-site thrift store, and more! In 2024, HSSM cared for over 5,000 homeless pets in house and touched over 16,000 animals in the community.

Since our incorporation in 1952, HSSM has been committed to ending pet overpopulation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. HSSM is the only Open Admissions Animal Shelter in South Mississippi, meaning we accept all animals in need, regardless of age, breed, health, or temperament. This commitment ensures that no lost pet is turned away. Oftentimes our open-admissions status in a community with a disproportionately high number of homeless pets leads to needless euthanasia of adoptable pets in our shelter HSSM has vowed to change this.
