My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Sugar is an absolute little sweetheart who lives up to her name in every way. At just 6 weeks old, she’s a tiny, lovable puppy with a gentle, playful personality and a heart full of love. She is friendly with everyone she meets and has that irresistible puppy charm that makes you fall in love instantly.

Sugar has a low energy level for her age, balancing playful moments with lots of quiet, cozy time. She enjoys toys, gentle play, and showing off her goofy side. One of her cutest traits is her funny sleeping positions — she can curl up in the most hilarious ways and look completely content. She’s still so young that she hasn’t even found her barking voice yet, making her a quiet little companion for now.

Because Sugar is only 6 weeks old, she is still learning everything about the world. This also means she’s at the perfect age to grow, learn, and bond deeply with her forever family. With patience, consistency, and love, she should easily learn potty training, routines, and basic manners as she grows. She can thrive in a home with or without another dog, as long as she has proper care and companionship.

Sugar had a heartbreaking start to life. She was left on the streets near a dumpster with no food, water, or shelter. Thankfully, she was rescued in time and brought into foster care, where she is now safe and receiving the care she deserves. Despite her rough beginning, Sugar is a happy, affectionate puppy who is ready for a fresh start.

Because she is so tiny and young, extra care should be taken in homes with children, especially those under 10 years old. Gentle handling and supervision are important to keep Sugar safe as she grows.

Sugar is a precious little girl with so much love to give. With a patient, caring family, she will grow into a wonderful companion and bring sweetness and joy to her forever home!

Sugar is from Texas. They arrive in Minnesota on 01/24/2026 and will need to be picked up from the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton, MN between the hours of 8:30am and noon. Please plan for their arrival accordingly as we cannot accommodate pickups outside of this time frame.  Since they haven’t arrived yet, they are available exclusively through Ruff Start’s Foster to Adopt (FTA) Program. Click here to learn more about the FTA program. Once they get to Minnesota, they might require further veterinary care. Ruff Start’s veterinary suite is located in Princeton, MN, and, as the foster, you will be required to transport your dog to and from these vetting appointments.

If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract.

To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our How to Adopt page.

*Rescue puppies are notorious for losing their birth certificates before entering our rescue. We cannot guarantee the breed or size they will be full grown.*

If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based rescue, meaning no animals are available at the Princeton, MN office for public viewing or adoption. All animals in our care reside in foster homes with few special exceptions for our adoption center animals, who are housed at our partnering facilities temporarily before adoption. To meet a Ruff Starter you may be interested in adopting, please submit an adoption application on our website.

More about this rescue

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit companion animal rescue that primarily serves communities throughout the state of Minnesota, as well as states in the south with severe pet overpopulation. We rescue stray, neglected, abandoned, and surrendered dogs and cats as well as ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other critters. Most of our work is accomplished by a complex network of volunteers, fosters, and supporters, all of whom come together to save thousands of animals each year.

Since our inception, we’ve firmly believed that a home is usually a far more desirable environment than a shelter or a kennel for most companion animals in need of a forever family. As a result, we rely nearly exclusively on volunteers to provide foster homes for rescued pets until they find their adoptive homes. Please note: this means no animals are available at our facility for public viewing.

Each pet in our care is provided with routine vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, microchipped, given internal and external parasite preventatives, and tested for common bloodborne pathogens such as heartworm and feline leukemia. Advanced veterinary care is provided to any animal that requires such services before adoption.

If you are interested in fostering, adopting, or volunteering, please fill out an applicable application at our website: www.ruffstartrescue.org.
