My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Pineapple Pen, known to his friends simply as Pen. Born 8/17, this growing boy is about 33 lbs now and expected to be around 45-60 lbs when full grown (give or take—he’s more focused on snacks than predictions). We aren’t sure on his breed, but he do know he’s made up of soft and squishy.

Pen is curious in the most puppy way possible. Every new item gets a quick investigation to see if it might be food… and if it might be food, he’ll double-check, just to be sure. He is very treat-motivated, which makes him a quick and eager learner. He already knows sit and lay down, fetches enthusiastically (dropping is still a work in progress), and is doing great with stay, even when waiting patiently for meals.

He’s crate trained, sleeps through the night, and is potty trained for his foster mom. Like most pups, he may need a little adjustment time in a new home, but he does have subtle cues to go outside. He’ll even ring bells to go out—he’s just not 100% consistent yet. Progress, not perfection!

Pen adores people and other dogs and absolutely loves kids. He’s still learning not to jump when excited, so supervision with smaller kids will help while he polishes those manners. He hasn’t been tested with cats or small animals yet, but with consistent training and clear boundaries, he should do well—his puppy curiosity just likes to be satisfied first.

At heart, Pen is a true companion dog. He likes to be wherever you are, preferably on a comfy bed, in a lap, or belly-up for scratches. He’s affectionate, adaptable, and always ready for whatever the day brings—whether that’s playtime, adventure, or a serious snuggle session. He’s currently a medium energy level pup, but loves napping after investigating every room for snacks and a good playtime run.

If you’re looking for a loving, food-motivated, snuggly best friend who’s up for anything, Pen is ready to fill that role and your lap!

Our standard adoption fee is $375 if paid by cash or check, or $385 if paid by credit card (which includes a $10 processing fee). This fee covers spay/neuter surgery when age appropriate at one of our participating veterinarians, age-appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative, and microchipping.

In order to be considered for adoption, we require a fully completed application, a phone interview, and a meet-and-greet with your entire family. Please note that submitting an application does not commit you to adopting and does not guarantee approval—it simply allows us to begin the review process.

If you are interested in adopting or would like additional information, please email us at adopt@safehavendogsIL.org to request an application.

Keep in mind that the breed and size listed in each dog's biography are our best educated guesses and are not guaranteed.

Safe Haven Dog Rescue reserves the right to refuse the adoption of any dog or puppy to any applicant for any reason.

More about this rescue

We are a small 501 C3 nonprofit rescue located in Elburn, Illinois. In 2014, Safe Haven Dog Rescue became its own non-profit. We are licensed by the Illinois Agriculture Department.

The majority of our dogs and puppies are pulled from Kill Pounds and Shelters in Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, and Illinois. We also accept local medical cases as often as our finances will allow.

Please take a few moments to read the stories about the dogs and puppies we have available for adoption. We disclose everything we know about the dogs, sometimes we know a lot often we know only that they were strays, thrown away on the side of the road, in the woods, or found in abandoned houses.

While we don’t always know their past we are certain that their future is much brighter.

We hope that you and your family are part of the future…..
