My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Banana Phone, though he also happily answers to Banana, Nana, or Nani. Born on 8/17, this sweet, houndy-looking boy is about 31 lbs now and expected to land somewhere around 45–60 lbs when full grown (give or take, because our guess is as good as yours).

Banana is the kind of puppy who makes you say, “Wow, you learned that already?” He’s a super fast, attentive learner who genuinely wants to please. He already knows sit, lay down, shake, and spin, and he’s very close to mastering stay. He loves games like fetch (especially the part where it turns into tug), and while he can play independently, he’ll politely remind you it’s time for attention with a gentle paw tap or a toy delivery.

He’s crate trained, sleeps through the night, and is potty trained for his foster mom. In a new home, he may need a short adjustment period, but he does have cues to go outside—he’s just not very vocal about them yet. Banana is also great with other dogs, adults, and kids. He’s still working on keeping all four paws on the floor when he’s excited, so supervision with very small kids would be important while he continues learning.

One of Banana’s best qualities is his balance—he’s the perfect mix of independent and companion. He’s happy to entertain himself, but he really shines when he’s part of the action with his people. He hasn’t been tested with cats or small animals yet, but he’s shown that he picks up on boundaries quickly, which gives us good hope there too. Right now he’s a medium energy level pup. He gets normal puppy energy bursts, but settles down quickly.

If you’re looking for a smart, affectionate, playful pup who’s going to grow into a loyal best friend, Banana might just be your guy.

Our standard adoption fee is $375 if paid by cash or check, or $385 if paid by credit card (which includes a $10 processing fee). This fee covers spay/neuter surgery when age appropriate at one of our participating veterinarians, age-appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative, and microchipping.

In order to be considered for adoption, we require a fully completed application, a phone interview, and a meet-and-greet with your entire family. Please note that submitting an application does not commit you to adopting and does not guarantee approval—it simply allows us to begin the review process.

If you are interested in adopting or would like additional information, please email us at adopt@safehavendogsIL.org to request an application.

Keep in mind that the breed and size listed in each dog's biography are our best educated guesses and are not guaranteed.

Safe Haven Dog Rescue reserves the right to refuse the adoption of any dog or puppy to any applicant for any reason.

More about this rescue

We are a small 501 C3 nonprofit rescue located in Elburn, Illinois. In 2014, Safe Haven Dog Rescue became its own non-profit. We are licensed by the Illinois Agriculture Department.

The majority of our dogs and puppies are pulled from Kill Pounds and Shelters in Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, and Illinois. We also accept local medical cases as often as our finances will allow.

Please take a few moments to read the stories about the dogs and puppies we have available for adoption. We disclose everything we know about the dogs, sometimes we know a lot often we know only that they were strays, thrown away on the side of the road, in the woods, or found in abandoned houses.

While we don’t always know their past we are certain that their future is much brighter.

We hope that you and your family are part of the future…..
