Gillie (also known as Gilbert) is an 8-month-old, 11-lb terrier mix with a gentle soul and a hopeful heart. He, his mama, two siblings, and another adult female were rescued from Taft after being kept outdoors in a backyard. The owner urgently needed them gone due to landlord issues. Whether the litter was accidental or the result of a failed breeding attempt, it was clear the puppies had been neglected—covered in ticks, smelling awful, and in desperate need of care and compassion. Thankfully, mama and Gillie’s siblings have all been adopted, and now it’s finally his turn.
Gillie is a sweet, sensitive boy who can be a bit shy when meeting new people or adjusting to new environments. Once he feels safe and earns your trust, his affectionate personality truly shines. He has just the right mix of spunk and sweetness. Gillie does well with children and other dogs and enjoys calmly “people watching,” always observant and aware of his surroundings.
True to his terrier roots, Gillie is energetic and playful. He loves running around the backyard and would thrive in a home that can provide daily exercise and mental stimulation. He’s doing well with potty training and simply needs a consistent routine to continue building confidence and good habits, as all puppies do.
Gillie is neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. He’s looking for a patient, understanding home that will give him the time and space he needs to feel secure. With gentle guidance and consistency, Gillie will blossom into a loyal, loving companion.
If you’re searching for an active, affectionate pup who just needs a little time and kindness to trust, Gillie may be your perfect match

More about this shelter
Since opening in 2011, Shelter Hope Pet Shop has rescued and re-homed over 16,000 animals.
Located at the Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks, Shelter Hope is a nonprofit, community-powered dog rescue dedicated to making a lasting impact on the lives of dogs in need, their adopters, and overcrowded shelters. We facilitate adoptions, welcome volunteers, and are committed to empowering the community through education and awareness.
Shelter Hope rescues strays and surrenders from as nearby as Ventura County and the LA area to as far as Bakersfield, where the community faces a severe animal overpopulation crisis. Moreover, we take in dogs of all ages from overcrowded no-kill and high-kill shelters, as well as from other urgent situations where dogs are at risk. These include often overlooked seniors and those with medical challenges.
While visiting local shelters is always encouraged, Shelter Hope provides a family-friendly, welcoming, retail-style environment where visitors can comfortably meet and connect with rescue dogs. Our thoughtful and thorough adoption process helps ensure each dog is placed in a stable, forever home, reducing the likelihood of them re-entering the shelter system.
Shelter Hope works tirelessly to give dogs in need a real second chance while easing pressure on overcrowded shelters.
