My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi all! I’m Toaster! My friends call me Toast for short. I’m not really sure how I got my name. Although the more that I think about it, maybe it’s because when you meet me, I will make your heart all warm and toasty? Yes, I think maybe that HAS to be it! Mystery solved! Although since I solve mysteries so well, maybe I should have been named Scooby Doo!

Anyhow, before I get distracted, let me tell you some things about me. I’m about 5 years old and they think I’m a mastiff or Cane Corso mix. So I’m kind of a big guy! But that doesn’t mean I have a big head! I mean, PHYSICALLY I do have a big head. What I mean is I don’t have a big head like a big ego. Gosh, sometimes it’s difficult to communicate in human.

Really, I’m just a happy guy, who is extremely curious about new things. I love going on walks and checking everything out with my nose. I really love checking out storm drains and sewers. I mean, you never know what might be living in them! I seem to like to meet new people on my walks, too. I usually walk quite nicely on the leash unless I see something I really want to check out, and then I forget not to pull. It’s hard to remember to walk nicely when you seek something really interesting! But I’m more than happy to work on my leash manners a bit.

I absolutely love riding in the car, and I am VERY well behaved riding in the car. I also love to play with toys like tennis balls and stuffies. I will admit, I sometimes think I’m the size of a puppy and I often get bouncy like a puppy! And I’ve been known to do zoomies when I get really excited. It seems to make everyone laugh. And I sure like making people laugh. I’ve been known to give big slurpy kisses and to “hug” people when I think they need it. So I hope you like kisses and hugs.

I like when humans pet me, but I much prefer booty scratches to head scratches. (I’ll let you in on a little secret; many dogs prefer that!) I think there’s almost nothing as good as a good booty scratch. Except maybe car rides.
I’m pretty good at sitting when asked, and I’m learning new things. I just haven’t had a whole lot of training with such requests, but I am receiving some now and I love to learn! Especially when learning is accompanied by some tasty treats!

I am NOT a fan of cats. Well, I mean I AM a fan of CHASING cats, but that activity seems to be frowned upon. So I need a home without cats. In fact, I'd like to be your one and only pet, if you don't mind.

If you are interested in making your heart feel all Toasty, or want to find out more about me, please call/text The Pet Connection at 913-671-7387.

More about this rescue

Since 1999, The Pet Connection has found homes for more than 7,000 animals and rehabilitated hundreds of dogs and cats with aggression, fear and anxiety issues. We have spayed or neutered over 8,000 dogs and cats in our own free and low-cost clinics since 2002 and assisted another 5,800 pets with low-cost services since 2006. The Pet Connection was founded in 1999 in Mission, Kansas, to offer shelter for homeless pets, adoptions and training. We were one of the first no-kill advocacy groups in the Kansas City metro area and the first cage-free facility in Johnson County to offer education about available spay and neuter programs. In 2006, The Pet Connection relocated to a facility in Mission that enabled all dogs and cats to have their own rooms while awaiting adoptive homes or being rehabilitated due to behaviors that hindered adoption prospects. The Pet Connection currently focuses on pet adoptions, dog and cat training, aggressive dog rehabilitation, and classes for pet owners. We were the first in this area to offer free training/behavior classes to adopters.

The Pet Connection trainers and behavior members use a team approach in order to implement the ideas that have the highest success rate. Our five behavioral trainers working out of the Kansas City metro have a variety of backgrounds applicable to dog training and behavior. The Pet Connection implements positive reinforcement training methods, where the dog learns to face the trigger, but to respond appropriately. Read about our experienced trainers under “Meet the Team" on our website at www.thepetconnection.net.

The Pet Connection has always been committed to being no-kill advocates. We have been involved in many projects with local and national organizations to help Kansas City progress in how homeless pets are cared for and to improve the services that they receive. Our organization is a 501c3 charity in the state of Kansas, and has always provided thousands of dollars worth of supplies, including cat litter, food, toys, beds and dog houses, to other rescues and shelters.
