Blackbeard I get the reference to the pirate Blackbeard; however, there is no evidence that he had only one eye. I, on the other hand, had a very small, nonfunctional left eye removed on December 31. I arrived at the HSHC as a 4-year-old stray five days before Christmas. I had never known kindness or caring from human beings before that day. I was not neutered, and understandably terrified of being confined in a cage. I did my best to flee from the examination. But the medical staff was able to check me over and provide the surgery and medicine I needed to recover. Because I was so frightened, I have been kept in the medical area of the shelter and am gradually beginning to trust the humans there. I tend to stay in my hidy bed unless someone picks me up and puts me on their lap. I really do love cuddling with my human friends, but if a stranger comes into the room, I will bolt for my bed. The medical staff reports that I am extremely shy, but “oh soooo sweet”! They have figured out that I do most of my business at night because in the morning, my litterbox is used and I’ve eaten nearly all my food. I love having my chin scratched, which makes me purr the loudest purrs and meow tiny little meows. I’m happy to report that my eye surgery and neutering went off without a hitch. If you decide to adopt me, you`ll have the unique joy of seeing a shy, gentle soul blossom with patience and love. Watching me learn to trust and cherish my new home will be rewarding—I`ll give you endless gratitude, quiet companionship, and the sweetest cuddles. Now all I need is a patient, understanding owner who knows I need lots of love and gradual introductions to my new home. I wouldn’t mind a name change either! With an open admission policy, a No-Kill philosophy, and more than 3,100 animals crossing our threshold each year, we have still maintained a 98% placement rate over the last 3 years.
This is an amazing feat for any organization…let alone one that takes in some of the most abused, injured and seriously ill animals imaginable.
