My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Velvet 💕
Velvet is a big, beautiful black Lab mix with a heart the size of Texas. She's up for adoption in the Lone Star State.
This loving girl is estimated to be around 3–4 years old, and while we don’t know much about her life before coming to Lucky Lab, it’s clear she’s been through a lot. When she arrived, Velvet had recently had a litter of puppies and showed signs of having had a rough start. Thanks to excellent care and plenty of love, she's healed, and her puppy days are over. She is now spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. Now Velvet is ready for her forever home.
Velvet currently lives with an active foster family that includes two teenage boys and three other female dogs, and she thrives as part of the pack. She loves being with her people and has two favorite pastimes: snuggling and adventuring.
Couch snuggles, bed snuggles, side-by-side snuggles—Velvet is all in. She’s the kind of dog who presses her whole body against you and soaks up every bit of affection. If a dog on the couch or bed isn’t your thing, Velvet probably isn’t your match—but if you’re looking for a true cuddle companion, she’s your girl.
She also enjoys getting outside and is a superb walking and hiking partner. Velvet walks beautifully on a leash, loves being active with her family, and is always up for an outing. She adores swimming too—while she may not retrieve, she happily swims alongside another dog who does, just enjoying the water and the company.
When Velvet first came to Lucky Lab, car rides were scary for her. She would try to hide rather than get in. With time, patience, and lots of positive experiences, she’s made huge progress. She’s still a bit hesitant about getting into the car, but once she’s in, she’s an excellent traveler—curling up and sleeping for most of the ride. She’s even become a camping enthusiast with her foster family.
Velvet is kennel trained and does very well staying crated when her family is away, making her an easy and trustworthy companion in the home.
When Velvet meets new people, she is gentle and kind, though a bit shy at first. She’ll accept pets politely but may seem reserved until she feels safe. With her own family, her true personality shines—confident, affectionate, and deeply devoted. Velvet is looking for an adopter who will be patient as they introduce her to new people and new situations.
In return, Velvet offers unwavering loyalty, endless affection, and a whole lot of love. She’s ready to spend the rest of her life being cherished—and she can’t wait to find the family who will do just that. 🖤

More about this rescue

Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption is an all-volunteer rescue organization whose mission is to reduce the euthanasia rates and inhumane treatment of abandoned Labrador retrievers by finding them loving, forever homes. We have saved more than 1200 dogs Texas shelters over the past two years.

When lucky Labs come into Lucky Lab Rescue, they are immediately vetted with vaccinations, spayed or neutered, heartworm tested and wormed for internal parasites. All dogs receive complete veterinary care before they are adopted out. Also at Lucky Lab Rescue, each dog is temperament tested and evaluated for any signs of aggression and for activity level. Since our goal is to place our Labs in forever homes, it is important to know the general personality of each Lab, as we want to match potential adopters with dogs that would be the best possible fit for a successful adoption.

Most Labs that come into Lucky Lab Rescue are from shelters. Most are at risk of euthanasia, usually due to overcrowded shelters. Labs are one of the most popular breeds of dogs due to their loyal and family-oriented personalities. Labs are also one of the most overbred breeds and are the number one breed to be found in shelters. They also have one of the highest euthanasia rates. Some find it difficult that rescues can be breed specific, however, Lucky Lab Rescue and other Lab rescues make a huge impact on euthanasia rates just by rescuing Labs and Lab mixes alone.

The most popular color of Labs are yellow and chocolate. They tend to get rescued and adopted more often than black labs. Some shelters will automatically euthanize black Labs and some rescue organizations will accept the yellow and chocolate over the black Lab. We at Lucky Labs love our yellows and chocolates, but also feel very committed to rescuing black Labs due to their plight.

"The plight of the black dog refers to the low adoption rate and high
euthanization rate of black dogs in shelters. Black dogs are often
the last to be adopted from an animal shelter. You may not be
aware of how doomed black dogs are when they are brought
to the average animal shelter. Black dogs, particularly large
black dogs like Labradors or Lab mixes, have a very difficult
time getting adopted, and are euthanized at a staggering rate at
many animal control facilities throughout the country. The sad truth
is, they are overlooked in favor of lighter colored dogs."

We are not a shelter. We are a rescue organization and our dogs are housed at several different foster homes.
