My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

**Note: Currently, Maru is in Korea, but he will fly to LA upon adoption.

Background
It was heartbreaking to learn that Maru spent five long years in a city pound. When we first met him, he was very timid and fearful of strangers. He sat quietly in a corner, watching people move around, unaware that his life was about to change after waiting for so long.

Maru was finally rescued and moved to our partner boarding house along with other rescue dogs. Since then, he has been living a peaceful and quiet life, gently coexisting with the other dogs around him. For the first time, he is learning what safety and calm truly feel like.

Personality and socialization
Maru is an introverted, quiet, and shy boy with a sweet and loving nature. All he needs is time and patience to feel safe in a new environment, and once he does, his gentle heart truly shines.

He enjoys staying close to his humans without being demanding. He is not affectionate, but he has his own gentle way of showing love. His presence is calm and comforting, and his trust, once earned, is very special.

With other dogs, Maru is very gentle and friendly. He tends to be on the submissive side and does best with calm, well mannered dogs. Loud, overly energetic, or dominant dogs can make him uncomfortable but he will bare.

Behaviour
Maru has always been quiet and well behaved. He is shy but at the same time polite at the vet and does well during baths and car rides. On walks, he can be timid at first, but once he trusts his person, he walks nicely on leash and follows their lead calmly.

He has not shown any signs of separation anxiety or destructive behavior. Maru is patient, and mellow, especially once he feels secure with his humans.

Health and diet
Maru is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. He has been dewormed and is on monthly parasite prevention. Maru also has a mild heart murmur. It is not heart disease, but regular monitoring will be needed to ensure he stays healthy. He currently eats dry food and has shown no signs of allergies.

Ideal home
Maru would do best with someone who has rescue experience, is patient, and understands how to communicate with a timid dog. A calm home with a gentle routine would suit him best. Having another friendly and gentle dog in the home would greatly help him settle and feel more confident.

A quiet home, preferably away from a busy city environment, would be ideal for Maru. He is not looking for anything extraordinary. All he needs is someone who can wait for him, give him time, and offer patience without pressure.

Once you earn Maru’s trust, you will become his favorite person in the world, and his quiet loyalty will be deeply rewarding.

More about this rescue

Free Korean Dogs is a registered charity founded in 2015 with the mission to rescue, rehabilitate and find forever-loving homes for dogs saved from the Korean dog meat trade.

We divide our mission across three basic pillars: rescue, adopt, and engage. Since 2015, we’ve made huge advances in all three areas, shutting down three dog meat farm operations, facilitating the adoption of 1,800 rescue dogs, and launching Freedom Walk, our annual event to raise public awareness about the Korean dog meat trade:

RESCUE
Our organization has made significant strides in rescuing dogs from the dog meat trade, high-kill shelters and other high-risk conditions in Korea. We shut down dog meat farms and liberated over 500 dogs from unbearable suffering and despair.

ADOPT
Through our unwavering commitment, we have found forever-loving homes for more than 1,800 dogs rescued from brutal circumstances. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to rehabilitate these animals and find them a new life filled with love and care.

ENGAGE
Our mission extends beyond rescue and adoption; we are dedicated to building a compassionate community. Through educational campaigns and events, we engage with individuals and organizations to create a cultural shift from cruelty to compassion.
