Sage is a resilient kitten with a big heart and a very sweet personality. After suffering an injury that required removal of the head of her femur, Sage has made a full recovery and is now healed, happy, and ready for her forever home.
Sage had a procedure called a femoral head ostectomy (FHO). This surgery is commonly performed in kittens and cats when the hip joint has been damaged due to injury or trauma.
In this procedure, the ball part of the hip joint (the head of the femur) is removed. While that may sound alarming, cats do extremely well with this surgery. Instead of a traditional hip joint, the body forms a strong, smooth “false joint” made of muscle and scar tissue, which allows the leg to move comfortably without bone-on-bone pain.
Long-term expectations
😸No special daily care is required
😸 No medications are needed
😸 She may have a slightly different gait or favor the leg occasionally, especially when tired or after heavy play
😸She should maintain a healthy weight, as excess weight can strain the hip area
😸Regular play and activity help keep the muscles strong. Her foster home has steps but she can jump on and off couches, chairs etc. She loves chasing toy mice and balls around and goes up and stairs without issue.
We do recommend she not be allowed on very high surfaces she’d need to jump from for a couple months to ensure full healing.
Despite her rough start, Sage is outgoing, friendly, and full of playful energy. She loves toys, interactive playtime, and exploring her surroundings. When she’s done playing, she’s more than happy to curl up for cuddles and soak up affection.
Sage would do wonderfully in a home with another playful pet who can match her energy and keep her entertained. She would also be okay with children, as long as they are respectful and gentle and understand how to handle a kitty kindly.
Sage’s past doesn’t define her—she’s thriving, loving, and ready to bring joy, fun, and snuggles to a family who will cherish her. If you’re looking for a sweet, brave, and playful companion, Sage may be the perfect match. 💚

Solano Kitten Network is a foster-based rescue, but we also maintain an adoption center at PetSmart Vacaville. We host adoption events every Saturday afternoon from 1:30 to 4:00 PM. Some of our kittens are housed at the center and can be viewed during store hours. For approved applicants, we’re happy to schedule Meet and Greets by appointment on days other than Saturday.

More about this rescue
Solano Kitten Network is a small, foster-based, volunteer-run rescue dedicated to saving the lives of kittens and cats in our community. We operate an adoption center inside PetSmart Vacaville, where our adoptable kittens can meet their future families. In addition to adoptions, we assist community members by offering access to low-cost spay and neuter services to help reduce the local cat population. As a small, all-volunteer organization, we’re always in need of more fosters and caretakers to support our mission.
