Zach is an almost-5-year-old, 64-pound Hound mix with a big heart, a goofy grin, and enough enthusiasm to power a small town. He originally came to the shelter as part of a group of hounds and was adopted in 2023 into what we all hoped would be his happily-ever-after. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned, and Zach returned to our care in October 2025 when he and other dogs on the property needed help and a fresh start.
Despite the twists in his story, Zach remains incredibly sweet, deeply people-loving, and full of joy. He is the definition of an overgrown puppy in the best way. He greets the world with excitement, curiosity, and a whole lot of affection. He loves being outside, enjoys running in the play yards, and is happiest when he’s moving, sniffing, and exploring. When he’s ready to relax, he turns into a total softie — especially if there’s a stuffed toy involved. Those are his absolute favorite.
Because Zach didn’t have much structure early on, he’s still learning some of the basics of home life. He will need an adopter who’s patient, consistent, and willing to help him with things like leash manners and house training. With guidance and positive reinforcement, he’s already showing how eager he is to learn and please.
Zach has done well with other dogs, and meet-and-greets are required to make sure everyone is a good match. He previously lived with cats.
Zach is neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested, and fully vaccinated, including rabies, dewormed and on monthly preventatives.

The Orange County Animal Shelter is responsible for providing humane care to unwanted, lost or abandoned animals
The Orange County Animal Shelter provides safe haven and vet care for hundreds of animals of all ages and descriptions each year.
Happily, we have had great success promoting our animals on Petsmart adoption events and with the help of Adopt A Pet. Dozens of animals have been adopted by people who have come from many other states. Would you like to join them? If so, please let us know! The greater our reach the more homes we will find for the animals in our care.
Although we are about 1.5 hours away from the Washington, D.C. metro area, it is an easy drive. You can even make a day of it and stop off at country stores, Civil War battlefield sites and a huge mall complex in Spotsylvania/Fredericksburg. And after all, what is a few hours in drive time when you will be meeting your new best friend? If you need help getting here, call us for directions
