My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jansen is a 1-year-old Beagle/Heeler mix, weighing about 23 lbs, with a tender heart and a whole lot to learn about the good life.

Before coming to the shelter, Jansen lived outdoors on a chain and never experienced a cozy, cared-for home. Because of that, much of the world is still new to him — indoor life, routines, and the idea that people and places can be safe and predictable.

Jansen is a sensitive, sweet puppy who can sometimes meet new situations with a bit of bravado. In unfamiliar or stressful moments, he may try to act bigger than he feels, especially around other dogs. This behavior appears to be rooted in insecurity rather than true assertiveness, and he benefits from slow, thoughtful introductions and calm handling.

Once Jansen has time to settle and feel safe, his softer side emerges. He becomes loose, wiggly, and playful, showing off a joyful puppy personality and a sense of humor that’s hard not to smile at. He enjoys movement and interaction but does best when play stays gentle and structured as he continues building confidence.

When walked through the cat room, Jansen showed no significant interest in the cats, though as with any pet, careful introductions in a home are always recommended.

Jansen will thrive in a home that offers patience, consistency, positive reinforcement, and understanding as he continues learning what it means to be a loved indoor companion. He’s still taking puppy steps — and doing his best every day.

Jansen is neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested, up to date on vaccinations (including rabies), dewormed, and started on flea/tick prevention.

More about this shelter

The Orange County Animal Shelter is responsible for providing humane care to unwanted, lost or abandoned animals
The Orange County Animal Shelter provides safe haven and vet care for hundreds of animals of all ages and descriptions each year.
Happily, we have had great success promoting our animals on Petsmart adoption events and with the help of Adopt A Pet. Dozens of animals have been adopted by people who have come from many other states. Would you like to join them? If so, please let us know! The greater our reach the more homes we will find for the animals in our care.
Although we are about 1.5 hours away from the Washington, D.C. metro area, it is an easy drive. You can even make a day of it and stop off at country stores, Civil War battlefield sites and a huge mall complex in Spotsylvania/Fredericksburg. And after all, what is a few hours in drive time when you will be meeting your new best friend? If you need help getting here, call us for directions
