My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Dolce, an incredibly happy lady with a constant helicopter tail who is always ready to get in the mix of friends and family. Her energy level is adjustable, which means she is equally happy to nap on your lap or go on a 2-hour hike. Despite being seven, Dolce indulges in the world with an infectious puppy energy. She loves her occasional zoomies, grass rolls, back scratches, and 20 minutes later, you might find her curled up for a nap. See her short video here! Dolce does not seem bothered by small animals that make their home nearby, including squirrels, birds, and even stray cats.

From her foster parents: Dolce is a dream doggo that seems almost too good to be true. Being the very trusting and loving bundle of joy that she is, Dolce is a perfect embodiment of her name and warmed up to us with belly rubs just within our first few minutes of meeting her. She is extremely affectionate and is almost guaranteed to snuggle right next to you and politely request scratches if you sit down at her level.

Dolce is extremely well-trained (house-, potty-, crate-, leash-trained!) and responds very well to commands like 'sit', 'leave it', 'come here', and 'out'. She also has not had a single accident since joining our home. She appears to be familiar with apartment environments and is confident with stairs and elevators. Dolce also has not reacted to any person, animal, or object (including a guy biking by with a broom!) and responds very well to redirections (verbal commands or tugging the leash). This also means she is an absolute dream on the leash (no pulling at all). Dolce is a classic gentle giant - picking up treats carefully from our hands and nudging her head into our hands for more pets. She is also crate-trained, and demonstrated this on her first night by heading straight to her crate the moment we brought her into our home and consistently sleeping/napping in there.

Dolce is a little overweight as of early Jan 2026, but we are working on lots of exercise and a balanced diet to get her back to her healthy self (and relieve some pressure from those joints!). She is already showing promising signs - she aced long walks and short runs with amazing energy, and has already gotten used to being hand-fed a healthy amount of food throughout the day.

If you are interested in sweet Dolce, please reach out for a meet and greet! We know Dolce would be 10000% thrilled to see and get to know you, and you will get to see her almost fly away with her tail! :)

Dolce CANNOT wait to go on a walk! (and she's a dream on the leash!)

Additional adoption info

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 kittens up to 6 months
$120 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

Go meet their pets

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please note, Adoption and Pet Resource Center lines close at 6:00 p.m. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family.
Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year.
