River is the answer to any of those questions. He is the ultimate hugger. The best hugger. And almost like a serial hugger - it's his favorite thing to do! River was a stray - taken to Sussex and then brought to us. For as forlorn as he looked while at Sussex, we couldn't believe how he hit the ground running with his hugs. It was the best greeting we could have hoped for. It was determined at the vet that River is heartworm positive (and he has begun treatment, which is fully covered by AAS) so our hugs are a bit more gentle right now. But still just as plentiful. Hounds are an adoring breed - they adore you, no matter what. So if you like hugs, love to be appreciated and have room in your heart for some four-legged love, River is for you. Please, please come meet him! There will be a prolific hugger just waiting to greet you - any day from 9am-12pm! Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. If all goes well and you decide to pursue adoption, you will be asked to complete a pre-adopt. Once your family, including any dogs, have also met with the dog you wish to adopt, your application will be submitted to the Adoption Committee for review. We estimate the pre-adoption process can take up to 14 days or longer.
Please note: AAS is committed to finding the best fit for each of our dogs. For this reason, we will accept multiple applications for a dog. In the case of multiple applications, we will select the applicant that is the best fit based on the needs of the dog.
Adoption fee for puppy/adult dogs is $300.00.
Adoption fee for senior dogs is $150.00.
Dogs qualify as a senior based on their stature/weight and age. The scale below shows the age at which a dog attains “senior” designation:
0-20 lbs: 11 years
21-50: 10 years
51-90: 8 years
91+: 7 years

We are a nonprofit organization that receives no funding from state or federal agencies. All of the funds required to maintain the shelter and care for the dogs come from donations and special fund-raising events. Donations to the shelter are tax deductible.
