Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Elroy is a gentle, tender hearted soul who is still learning that the world can be a kind and safe place. He may be timid but beneath that shyness is an incredibly sweet dog with a loving heart just waiting to bloom.
Elroy enjoys car rides especially when he can feel the breeze on his face and those quiet moments seem to bring him a sense of peace. At home, Elroy truly shines as a certified bed bug. The bed is his safe place where he feels most relaxed and trusting. From there, he will happily snuggle in, inch closer to you, and even gently take treats from your hand as his confidence grows.
Because Elroy has a difficult time interacting with humans at first, he would do best with patient adopters who understand that trust takes time. A home with another friendly, confident dog would be ideal. Elroy takes great comfort in canine companionship and would benefit from having a buddy to show him how to be a dog.
With love, patience, and a calm environment, Elroy will make a deeply rewarding companion. Watching him come out of his shell will be a beautiful journey and one he is ready to take with the right family.
Elroy is currently living at the shelter but we would like to get him in a foster home where he can work on confidence and receive lots of love.
Elroy is one year old and weighs 29 pounds.
The adoption fee for adult dogs, seven months and older, is $250. All pets are microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and will be altered prior to adoption. If you are interested in meeting a dog, please stop by the shelter during open hours. Dogs may be in a foster home, therefore scheduling an appointment is recommended. If you have an existing dog at home, we recommend bringing it along to meet your possible new family member. helpingstrays.org

Go meet their pets
We welcome you to stop by our facility located at 4221 Hanover Road in Columbia, IL.
We promote the humane care of all abandoned and stray animals in our community. We are a no-kill shelter. All of our pets leave the shelter for their forever homes micro-chipped, up to date on vaccines, and altered.
Founded in 2002, Helping Strays is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization supported entirely by donations.
Our lucky animals receive appropriate medical care, are featured on the Helping Strays website "adoption list" and are taken to several adoption events every month in an attempt to find permanent, loving homes.
