My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Sailor: A Gentle Soul Seeking Her Forever Safe Harbor
Sailor is the definition of "still waters run deep." This incredibly soft, quiet girl is a gentle observer of the world who is slowly learning what it means to be loved. While she may appear aloof at first, she is simply a dog who is discovering the comforts of home—likely for the first time in her life.

Sailor finds her true confidence through the company of others. She is much braver when she has a small, friendly dog by her side to show her the ropes, so she would thrive best in a home with a resident canine companion. She is a remarkably peaceful presence and has yet to bark, making her an ideal match for a household that prefers a quiet atmosphere.

Her journey of discovery is truly touching. Because she likely never had simple comforts in her past, Sailor will often push away plush blankets to sleep on the hard floor. However, she is starting to take an interest in toys; while she hasn't quite figured out how to "play" yet, she has found great joy in carrying them around like little treasures.

In terms of daily life, Sailor is mostly house-trained and handles transitions well, though she still needs a bit of help with stairs. She is an absolute angel during veterinary visits and allows for all types of handling—from vaccines to ultrasounds—with a calm and trusting demeanor.

Safety is key for this sweet girl. Sailor is a bit of a "catch me if you can" artist when she’s exploring a fenced yard, so she should stay on a lead until she develops a solid recall—especially during chilly weather when she’d rather stay outside than head back in. Because she can be a bit of a flight risk when she’s unsure, she must always wear a well-fitted martingale collar to ensure she stays securely by your side.

The ideal home for Sailor is a patient, quiet sanctuary. She would do best with a family that doesn't mind a bit of a "wallflower" and who can provide a peaceful environment without loud noises. While she is timid, she is incredibly sweet and would likely tolerate well-behaved, respectful children. If you have the patience to let her blossom at her own pace, Sailor will reward you with a quiet, steady devotion that is truly special.

Additional adoption info

Here’s what to expect when you arrive at Tails Humane Society:

A staff member will ask you what sort of pet you are looking for and then will provide you with information about specific pets that appear to be a good fit for your family, taking into consideration such factors as: kids, level of activity, your pet experience, other animals currently in the home, etc. You will be encouraged to interact with the pet or pets of your choice in a private visiting room. We believe that bringing a new pet into your home is an important decision so you’ll have plenty of time to make your decision without feeling rushed. Staff and volunteers will be available throughout this time to answer any questions you may have. Once you’ve made your choice, an adoption counselor will review the adoption contract with you.

You’ll pay the adoption fee. Then you’ll take your new family member home with you!

An animal can be put on hold in person at the TAILS facility during regular adoption hours.

More about this shelter

Our mission: Saving the lives of companion animals through rescue, adoption and spay/neuter; advocating for pets in our region.

Tails Humane Society is a limited admission animal shelter providing a safe haven for over 2,200 animals each year. We are committed to providing each animal the time and medical care they need to have their best chance at adoption.

Tails was established in 1999 by a group of local animal advocates dedicated to bringing a comprehensive animal shelter to DeKalb. We operated out of an old farmhouse until 2005 when we cut the ribbon on our Barber Greene facility. In 2009, we opened our low cost Spay/Neuter Clinic providing quality, affordable sterilization services to the public. We continue to grow and strengthen our programs and service as we continue to save lives.
