My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello, I'm Coco. My journey here is woven with magic. One starlit night, while dreaming beside my two kittens, a whispering wind told us of a place where warmth and love awaited. By morning, we found ourselves nestled in this cozy shelter. I'm a gentle soul, seeking a quiet corner in someone's heart and home. My sweet nature makes me the perfect companion for peaceful days. If you long for a touch of magic and a lot of love, I'm just the friend you need.

Note from Paws human: Coco belonged to a 90-year old woman who never had her spayed, so she ended up pregnant. She had two kittens. The elderly woman died, and one of her neighbors brought in Coco and the kittens to Paws Animal Shelter. Coco is very shy and so far is hanging out on top of the cage in our Zen Meow room (set up for cats who need a calm home environment). In taking her photos I climbed on a chair and petted her, and she immediately started purring. She clearly loves attention but is a little to frightened yet to come down and meet people. With a little time, we're sure she'll come out of her shell. She really is a beautiful, loving cat. More about this shelter

The Champaign County Humane Association, Inc. (CCHA) was founded in 1977, initially relying solely on fosters to care for stray animals. In 1991 they opened Paws Animal Shelter in Champaign County, a rural county with a total population of about 39,000. In 2018 the CCHA decided to transition Paws Animal Shelter to a cat-only facility, as there is a desperate need in our area for additional shelter spaces for cats and kittens.

Thanks to a generous donation we were able to expand our shelter in 2021, which has enabled us to rescue even more cats and kittens. While this is obviously a positive development, it has definitely increased our operating costs, as so many cats and kittens that we take in have not been spayed or neutered. In addition, many cats that are surrendered to us have not been in homes with the financial resources to properly care for them, so we frequently have to pay for dentals and other expensive procedures. We are passionate about saving as many cats and kittens as possible, and they have a home with us until we find a forever home for them!
