Meet Copper! He is a 1 year old, Redbone Coonhound. This truly handsome boy is an indoor pet. Copper may need a bit more training, as he does still have accidents from time to time. He weighs 55 pounds, and is sweet, cuddly and playful. Copper is good with men, women, children and with other dogs. Copper's coloring is sort of red/chestnut/orange. Bad habits are chewing and fence jumping (he wants to try to catch rabbits, if anywhere near). You will need a tall, sturdy fence for when this guy is outdoors alone. Copper may need some heavy duty toys and lots of attention from any new owners. This very friendly boy needs a home! Amarillo SPCA, 11901 S. Coulter. 806-622-0555. Open Tues.-Sat 12 to 5 p.m.

More about this shelter

The Amarillo SPCA is a 501(c)3 non profit organization. We operate solely on donations and fundraisers.

Presently, we operate a shelter for dogs and cats. We have approximately 100 animals housed at the shelter and in foster care.

One of our main concerns is pet over population. It is important that the public be educated about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. It is also our goal to make sure every animal that is adopted from the SPCA is sterilized before going to a new home.

We receive calls daily from people who request help with their animals--either needing to give them up or asking for help with food and medical needs. We help whenever we can, but financially we're not able to help often.

We have grown to the extent that volunteers alone cannot provide necessary hours for operating the kennels. We have a shelter manager and other part time employees for the care of the animals and maintenance of our facility.

Costs for our facility include payroll for these employees, good quality food for the animals, heat and air conditioning, medical treatment for sickness or injury. Additional costs for the animals always include vaccinations, deworming, microchipping and sterilization before leaving the shelter to go to new homes. Our vet bills are high and frequently expenses are far more than the adoption fee of $100. Therefore donations are hugely appreciated! We look forward to your contribution and particularly to your interest in one of our dogs or cats as a permanent companion.
