This helps New Beginnings International Sporting Dog Rescue with pet care costs.
Socialization: Beemer is very friendly and warms up quickly to new people. He loves when people come over and once he knows you are a friend, he is a friend too! He gets along with everyone and is very friendly and playful. He tries to get our 10 year old dog to play but listens to him when he does not want to. He is an active crazy puppy and gets zoomies in the house. He is more submissive and has done well with all members of our family as well as people he meets. He has met people at PetCo and loved all the attention he received!
Training: Beemer is crate trained. Since he is a puppy, it's for his own safety. He loves to chew toys up, so he should still be monitored at all times. He is well behaved in the house, but as a puppy, he needs supervision. He doesn't love the crate, but sleeps in it at the foot of our bed at night with no issues. He will sometimes bark for about 5-10 min if I have to leave him during the day. We have not worked on any specific commands, but he does know "good potty" when he goes outside. He is a very smart boy and learned our rules and routine very quickly here! I would say he is about 95% housetrained - he is even starting to go to the door to tell me when he needs to go out.
Activity requirements: Beemer is a pointer mix, but not as active as a full pointer. He loves to run and play and wrestle, but leash walks would also be ok for him, he would probably need 20-30 minutes in the morning and evening. I would prefer an area for him to be able to run off leash safely in his forever home.
Fence requirements: A fenced yard is preferred for a young puppy to get all their energy out. A tired puppy makes for a well behaved puppy! Dog parks or Doggy Daycare would be ok for him as well.
Personality: Beemer is very goofy and derpy! He loves to be with us, unless he is very tired, then he doesn't follow me around like he usually does. He is very curious and inquisitive and can get into mischief. He is cuddly and playful, loves to meet new people and may just need a few moments to warm up.
Health history: Beemer tested positive for Giardia antigens in the USA, so he had the parasite in Greece, but the treatment there worked. He was also treated for a mild ear infection. He is in great health. He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. His next Leishmaniasis test is due 11/11/2026.
This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.
Foster comments: Beemer, his 9 siblings, and mom were found last summer after the fires in Greece. The puppies were only 4 weeks old when they were found. We are so happy that New Beginnings Greek Sporting Dog Rescue saved them and now they have a chance at a wonderful life! Beemer is a super sweet puppy. For being 8 months and 45 lbs, he has been relatively easy! He learns routine quickly and is such a silly and lovable pup. We are hopeful for a wonderful and active family to give him a lifetime of the love that he deserves! You can see more photos and videos of him on his instagram @i_love_setters
Foster location: Oak Park, IL
Transport note: We are able to arrange volunteer transport to get dogs from their foster home to their adopter as long as the adopter and the foster are within a 1,000 mile radius of each other and the adopter is located in the USA. If the adopter is more than 1,000 miles from the foster home, adoption would only be possible if the adopter is willing to drive the distance beyond the 1,000-mile transport limit. Long distance adoptions may also be possible if the adopter is willing to pay for a flight for getting their dog from the foster home to their location if the foster feels this is an appropriate arrangement for the specific dog. Canadian adopters would have to drive into the USA to pick up their dog, as we do not transport outside of the USA.
