people with herding/working dog experience recommended, multiple meets a requirement
Dog Name: Billy Joel
Breed: mixed
Sex: male
Age: approx 1 year
Weight: 30 lbs
Medical Needs: none
Housebroken: yes, he has been great in his foster home since we follow a very strict 2-week shutdown.
Crate trained: he goes into his crate without issue, although tossing a treat in definitely helps seal the deal. He likes being crated around his other doggie friends. That being said…
HE IS A VOCAL GUY. If he’s gotta go potty in the morning, he will howl and sing the song of his people until you let him out. He will also howl during the transition of adoption.
For this reason we do not recommend him going to an apartment or townhome (any housing with shared walls).
Good in the car: he is terrified and will try to hide behind you as you drive around, shaking like a leaf. He is doing better the more he is exposed to it, but we still have to pick him up occasionally to help him into the car.
Good on a leash: it’s kinda like walking a flopping fish, we use a prong to control his ADHD the best we can. He’s also still nervous about new smells and sounds during his walk, so we are slowly increasing his radius on our walks.
Energy level: 20 out of 10
Once he gets comfortable in your home he will leave the shaking, howling dog behind and turn into a jumping, prancing lunatic
Need a fenced in yard: if you’re the type of person that enjoys daily runs at cheetah speed, then no fence required. If you’d like him to burn off the energy while you relax in a chair, we recommend a 6 foot fence and a sizable yard.
Dog Friendly: yes, he loves all dogs! His crazy energy isn’t always reciprocated but he seems to learn his place in a pack quickly.
If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? Yes absolutely. This is a non-negotiable.
Cat Friendly: yes, he does well with a chill cat. The ones that interact and play with him get him VERY worked up so we are still doing leashed interactions to keep things safe. He likes to play with them with his mouth wide open, so we’re working on more socially acceptable types of playing.
Kid Friendly: yes
If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Teen or older, they need to know that Billy will take time to be comfortable and to give him space.
Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them:
BILLY IS TERRIFIED OF MEN. He is slowly learning to trust Mr. Man in his foster home. He used to tuck his tail ALL the way in and shake like a leaf. He would also cower and growl in fear. With Mr. Man feeding him treats, fried chicken, and being involved in every meal time, Billy is slowly learning that men aren’t so bad. This process will take MONTHS and his adoptive home will have to be patient and trust the process. He will not like new people in your house, so he will have to be crated away from guests when you host game nights or BBQs. Once he knows you’re a safe and kind person, he becomes the happiest, wiggliest most energetic boy you’ve ever seen. Thought your home was quiet and calm? Add Billy and you’ll be entertained for the rest of his life. He takes a second to understand new things (like “sit”) but once he catches on he will show off anytime and anywhere. He does get a little “toothy” when he gets excited (my working dog people know exactly what I mean) so we’re working on him not smiling so much. Billy can’t help it, he’s so grateful to be out of the Amish world! It doesn’t take much to get him smiling and jumping around. If you enjoy dog training, exercising, and having a never-ending source of entertainment (he fell over once trying to chase his tail too fast)… Billy might be the dog for you!
