Introducing Smootie… Smoots… Smoots-Smoots! ✨
She has all the names — and answers to them all. 💕
This absolutely lovable girl has been through more in her 1.5 years than most ever should. Smoots was found last May weighing only 22 pounds, barely alive and riddled with shotgun pellets. Her finder truly believed she had already passed — and honestly, we still can’t believe she didn’t.
She was starved, shot, and heartworm positive. When she was rushed to the vet, the expectation was to help her cross with dignity… but instead, Smoots looked up with those big brown eyes, asking for a chance — and a chance is exactly what she got.
I received a call from her angel at the vet asking only if I could help fundraise for her medical care (which we did on our personal page), with no intention of bringing her into our program. But as her recovery continued, we kept hearing the same thing over and over: how incredibly sweet and loving she was.
Smoots gained weight, endured heartworm treatment, and went through multiple surgeries to remove pellets — including sinus surgery. One pellet remains in her nose that cannot be safely removed due to placement, but it does not stop her from living a happy, healthy life.
Today, Smoots is a healthy 42 pounds of pure love. When she was finally ready to travel, we simply couldn’t say no. 🐾
💛 About Smoots:
• Housebroken
• Crates like a pro
• Rides in the car like a champ
• Leash trained
• Good with cats
• Submissive with dogs of all sizes (currently in foster with multiple dogs)
She is still nervous at times and may “pancake” if voices are raised — PTSD is real, even in dogs. We haven’t kid-tested yet, but there truly isn’t a human she doesn’t love. Honestly, she probably didn’t even fight back against the person who hurt her. Smoots holds no grudges… even though she’d be justified if she did.
She’s learning every day that humans are meant to love, not hurt.
She also proudly holds a double master’s degree in butt wiggles and zoomies. 🎓🐕
🐶 Breed? Puggle? Black Mouth Cur?
We say ADORABLE.
📍 Interested in being Smoots’ forever?
You must be willing to travel to Kingston to meet her.
🩺 Vetting Requirements (NO EXCEPTIONS):
• All current dogs must be on heartworm prevention
• Dogs must be altered and receive annual vet care
We take vetting very seriously at NBLCF.
