My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sally is a 7-year-old American Cocker Spaniel who is learning what it means to feel safe, loved, and understood after a difficult start to life. Like many dogs who come from a breeding background, the world can still feel overwhelming to her at times, especially around unfamiliar people or fast-moving sights and sounds. With gentle guidance and patience, Sally is slowly discovering that home can be a calm and comforting place. At her core, Sally is incredibly sweet and deeply people-oriented. She truly prefers human companionship over canine company and thrives on affection from the people she trusts. Once she feels safe, she loves being close, soaking up pets, and simply sharing space with her person. She wants to please and has a warm, affectionate nature that shines through more and more each day. For a dog who has missed out on consistent love, her desire to connect is both touching and rewarding. Sally is still working through some challenges that stem from fear and uncertainty rather than defiance. She is working on housetraining and continues to learn with consistency and routine. Crate time can be stressful for her, though having a calm presence nearby helps her settle. She can become anxious around other dogs, especially when resources like toys or attention are involved, and she may guard items or people she values. Sally has recently discovered her inner counter-surfer and is convinced unattended tables are snack buffets, so consistent redirection, positive training, and maybe fewer goodies on the coffee table will be part of the plan for her house.Sally also startles easily and is uncomfortable with fast movement, bikes, or busy environments. These behaviours are her way of asking for understanding, structure, and time as she builds confidence. Sallys ideal home is a quiet, predictable environment with patient adopters who understand fearful dogs and are committed to helping her feel secure. A home without other dogs would be best, though a very calm, respectful dog who gives her space could be considered. She would do best without children, or with older, dog-savvy kids who can move calmly and respect her boundaries. Sally is looking for someone who sees her not for her fears, but for the loving, loyal companion she is becoming. With compassion, consistency, and kindness, Sally has so much love to give, and she will give it wholeheartedly to the person who earns her trust. Additional adoption info

Before inquiring about a specific dog for adoption, please ensure you have read their complete bio. We try to provide a complete description of each dog’s preferences in their write up including whether they are good with children and/or other pets. Adoption fees for each dog are also listed in their bio. If you still have questions about a dog you’re interested in please send us a message and one of our volunteers will respond as soon as possible.

The first step if you are interested in adopting one of our available dogs is to complete the following Adoption Application. Once your application is received one of our volunteers will review it and then get in touch with you to schedule a time for an interview. When possible, we request a Skype or Facetime interview with you, so that we can complete your “phone interview” and “home visit” all at once. If these applications are not available to you we will schedule your phone interview first and, following that, we will schedule a home visit where a volunteer visits to meet all family members and see where the dog would be living.

Our focus is on making the best match, not only for our rescue dogs, but also for our adoptive families. We want our adoptions to be successful for all involved so please understand that our adoption process is in place to ensure this happens.

More about this rescue

Precious Paws Rescue was founded in December 2006 and is based in Simcoe County, Ontario. We do not operate a shelter facility; all of the dogs that we accept into rescue are fostered with volunteers in this area. Precious Paws was officially incorporated as a non-profit in Ontario in 2010 and registered as a charitable organization in 2019. We are, and always have been, 100% volunteer-run.

We receive daily requests for rescue help from animal shelters and also from owners who are no longer able to care for their dogs. Precious Paws accepts all breeds, all sizes and all ages, we are limited only by the foster spaces we have available and by monetary funds. Foster homes, volunteers and donations are always greatly appreciated so be sure to click over to our “How You Can Help” pages to see how you can get involved.

Precious Paws Rescue ensures that each and every dog we rescue has full veterinary care provided prior to adoption. This includes (but is not limited to) full age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal test and deworming, wellness bloodwork and heartworm test, spay/neuter and microchip. We believe that no dog should be adopted out unaltered (unless there is a medical reason prohibiting this) so we practice pediatric spaying and neutering for all puppies that enter our rescue as well. Often the dogs we rescue require additional veterinary treatments to prepare them for adoption and most dogs that we take in end up costing the rescue much more than the adoption fee recovers. We lose an average of $600 on each and every dog that we rescue. For this reason we host fundraisers and donation drives throughout the year so that we are able to continue being available for the dogs who need us most.

In 2015 we started “Loved At Home” (formerly “Boo’s Fund”) – a fund that endeavors to keep more families together when medical emergencies arise with beloved pets. Sometimes good pet owners fall on hard times and are unable to afford an injury or acute illness with a pet. Most often those owners are forced to euthanize their companion or surrender them to a shelter or rescue to ensure they receive the care they need. Precious Paws would prefer to keep well cared for dogs out of the shelter/rescue “system” and we created Loved At Home to do just that. When funds are available, we will provide pet owners with the money needed to assist with emergency veterinary care, so that dogs don’t lose the family they love and so that there are fewer dogs in need of shelter/rescue assistance. Loved At Home also supports families by providing food donations and temporary foster homes when the situation calls for it.

Precious Paws Rescue has grown a great deal from the one foster/volunteer that we started out with. Because of dedicated volunteers, generous supporters and committed adopters, we have been fortunate enough to directly change the lives of many, many dogs since we started. Our hope is to continue to provide relief to the dogs that need us most for many years to come.
