My friends at Wayside say: - I can be shy at first, but I’m a silly guy when I warm up! - I am eligible for a Slumber Pawty, a 7-10 day in-home trial period. Please visit our website for additional information.
My home preferences: - I need a quiet home environment. - I will need extra time to warm up in a home.
Oh, hello there, thanks for stopping by. I’m Samuel, a 2-year-old guy who’s still learning about the world. Don’t let my initial fearfulness fool you; I have a lot of personality hiding behind my eyes!
I spent my entire life with one family, until a cross-country move forced them to leave my brother and I behind. I’m not mad at them, because I know they needed to do what was best for them and for us, but man, when I ended up at the shelter, my world was turned upside down. I hid for weeks when I first got here. I was absolutely terrified. I would hiss and swipe at anyone who got close to me; how was I supposed to know if they were my friends or not?
Some very dedicated staff and volunteers spent a lot of time going at my pace to help me get comfortable. Eventually, I started to take treats in their presence, and even started to enjoy being pet with a wand toy, but hands were still terrifying. I was making progress, but it was incredibly slow, and the staff at the shelter knew they needed to try something else.
That’s when my foster moms came and got me! At first, that was terrifying too; yet another change, a new place, and even more new people. I hid a lot, at first, and only came out at night to eat… And eventually, check them out while they slept… And then when they were sitting quietly on the couch… At each step, they knew not to push me, and to give me time and space. Within just a few weeks, I’d found a new lease on life, and now I feel safe to snuggle and play like a normal cat!
I’ve been through so much, and come so far. Change is really hard for me, and I need a family who understands that and can give me a safe, quiet space where I can go at my own pace. I promise that if you give me some time, I’ll do everything I can to be your very best friend!
