My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Mowgli 🐾

Mowgli’s story began far too early and far too alone. At just 4 weeks old, he was found sitting at a stop sign on a major highway—covered in fleas, scared, and by himself. Thanks to a kind Good Samaritan, Mowgli was brought safely to the shelter, where he spent only one night before coming into foster care.

In just three short weeks, Mowgli has shown the kind of resilience that stops you in your tracks. This is a puppy who once didn’t want to be held—or even touched—and is now a little soul who wags his entire body when someone speaks to him. His progress is a beautiful testament to his strength, sensitivity, and quiet bravery.

Mowgli is being raised alongside a loving pack of huskies and has learned a lot from them, but he still needs very slow, thoughtful introductions to new dogs—especially those his size or unfamiliar to him. He absolutely adores cats and is gentle, respectful, and calm with them.

Like many puppies who had a rough start, Mowgli is still learning how to self-regulate his emotions. He will thrive with clear boundaries, patient guidance, continued training, and positive socialization. He’s a bit of a grumbly guy when being picked up, but with time, trust, and patience, he allows it—he just likes to be understood.

Mowgli is a teething machine, though he’s picky about toys. Bones don’t impress him much, but Kongs and certain stuffies are his absolute favorites. He’s currently working on potty training and crate training; while the crate isn’t his favorite place at first, he settles within about 10 minutes and sleeps through the night like a champ.

He loves human interaction, enjoys playtime, and is still learning what appropriate play looks like—something that will continue to improve with consistency and structure.

Mowgli is neutered as of 1/29/26 and is up to date on all age-appropriate vaccines.

The Bastrop Animal Control organization became a reality in 1998. We've grown since then and continue to do so as Bastrop County grows. Currently, we have 3 separate buildings containing a total of 90 large indoor/outdoor kennels and 8 play yards. We have 30 indoor cat kennels. We also have a 3 room cattery, that enables cats to live together in colony type environments until they find their forever home. If you have ever worked with or adopted a shelter pet, you know just how much they crave the attention and love we and our volunteers can provide and their eternal gratitude when they find their forever home at last.
